Latest call to my dealer -- valve clear/rear bearings

Just called another Toy. dealer and they quoted me 1.5 hours on the rear bearings, plus parts --

-- and 2.5 hours for the valve clearance inspect/adjust -- I mentioned this was a specific job, requiring cam removal for #6 cylinder, etc., etc., and they said they knew of that -- and will give before and after clearance values --

I may do this myself or just have them do it -- I'm surprised at the variances in hours though --

Eric,

The only hard and fast labor times are the ones dictated by warranty. All dealers sing off of the same sheet of music there as that is what Toyota says they will pay for a specific job. Quite often the warranty times are on the short side and the tech will loose his bottom on the job. Other time estimating systems such as Mitchell or Motors tend to be more gererous. Time guides are just that, a starting place. Repair shops use them to "estimate" how long an unfamilar-to-them job should take. On familar jobs shops often select an average time based on experience with the repair and use that one.
I imagine that some may use a guide published time for some jobs knowing they can "beat the clock" and may add time for jobs that can get hung-up and take longer than "the book" would suggest.

Dan.

Thanks, Dan -- this makes sense -- I'll definitely shop it around, though I will likely try and do it myself -- there's good "how to's" on this site --

Ok, So if I understand correctly, since I have 122k miles on my cruiser. I should have my clearances checked/adjusted, regardless of what the service manager says @ the local dealer? ???

Eduardo,

I believe I would, especialy if you have reason to believe that the job has never been done. Also be sure to ask them to replace the spark plug tube seals in addition to the valve cover gasket. they are often over-looked and quite important for proper sealing.

C-dan,
I have all service records from previous owner. I'll check them to see if it was done with the 60k service. But, I will definetly
start looking into getting it done soon. 8)
Thanks,
Eduardo
