They'll go the way of the 40's, 60/62's, and the 80's. We'll drive till they break and then build them the way WE want to, different engines, different suspensions. All is happy in L/C land. But, a diesel......hmmmmm.

our only bright spot is if I can get parts for a 73 FJ40 and an 84 FJ60 from the Toyota Dealer still to keep OEM items correct....then can only hope that in 20 years I can still get FJ Cruiser parts just as easily. With that support things will be okay......and still hope another offroad specific Toyota is being produced by then.

Toyota sales have been down the last two quarters. Something that has never happened to them since coming to the U.S. The revamped (and beautiful I might add) Supra is also rumored to be on the chopping block. If it does happen, you can send a Thank You card to the White House (before 1/20/09).

The new FJ is very popular. I have even thought about buying another one and keeping my 100 too. What I WOULD like to see though is the return of Ambulance Doors on the FJ, and redesign the rear windows to have two regular side windows instead of the wrap around side windows in the rear.

I hope they are not really considering dropping the FJ.

AN recently revealed Toyota's future product plans, which show the automaker moving away from the enthusiast niche vehicles like the FJ Cruiser to instead focus on the new fuel efficiency standards.

I couldn't give a crap less about fuel efficient vehicles. I'd rather have a vehicle I like and enjoy driving than one that looks stupid and gets 50 mpg.

There is another SUV in Toyotas lineup that is going away though.
Many think it is the FJ, they are going to be shocked when they find out which one it really is if this all plays out.

Of course things can change though, and it is not 100% set in stone yet.

Corey,
You seem to know something so what is it?
Maybe you can just preface it by saying "rumor has it..."

Toyota will make a 4 door FJC and eliminate the 4Runner? Or?
Please elaborate your thinking

4 Doors, live front axle ( with optional locker sure ) and turbo diesel engine, and I'm 100% sure that that will raise the FJC sales around the world .. ( no matter the price )

I do not think they would go as far as a solid axle up front, but it would be nice.
If they did, I am sure a lot of the 1st gen owners would be upgrading.

I would not trade mine in though if they did that, I have to much invested in mine now that I would not recoup, plus for the style of off road driving that I do, I would never take full advantage of a solid front axle.

They would have to bring back the solid axle first for the Land Cruiser since that is their niche vehicle.

lote to dream with it .. at least it's free ..

They just showed that retro Tacoma with 80 series running gear including solid front axle. So, maybe they are testing the waters to see if there is enough interest?

SFA again would be awesome.

FJ Cruiser Alive for 2009 but 2010 - Maybe No...

I think the rumor is the plant where the FJ's made has plans to re-tool to make hybrids killing the FJ in its current form. This somewhat makes sense to me, hybrid is the new direction all car makers seem to be moving. I've also seen blog's mentioning a possible hybrid version of the FJ under consideration so maybe some truth in the speculation?

Here’s a link to the Toyota site w/article addressing this issue http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2242480/35101497 a subsequent entry in this string states the article avoids the issue of 2010 FJ (which it does) and focuses on “there are plenty of FJ’s still available and more 2009 FJ’s coming” if you have good credit you can get a great deal w/Toyota financing…and so on.

Remember Doritos ads when Jay Leno said "Eat all you want...we'll make more!" But, alas, they stopped making Nacho Cheese Doritos. Now you must buy Nacho CHEESIER Doritos. They are not the same Dorito! And, they have rounded corners! Remember when the corners were pointed? What's the deal here, product safety?

Not to digress into food but this little clip-and-paste "snippit" illustrates my point. Toyota may plan to “improve” the FJ and “solve some of the design problems” like poor gas mileage but I for one have no interest in a hybrid synergy drive FJ Cruiser II.

Can you imagine a TRD Special Edition hybrid running Baja? How about a TT Rock Crawler with Hybrid Synergy Drive? No thanks, but on the other hand if they can win Baja with it maybe I’d have to reconsider?

I agree with this 100%. I believe that if they put a diesel option in the FJ Cruiser they would not be able to build them fast enough. I want a new diesel powered cruiser-type vehicle so bad I can't stand it. Toyota knows there is a demand for these vehicles in the States but they won't sell us one. What ever manufacturer comes with one first will get my business. I hope it is a LC or a FJ Cruiser or 4Runner, but I if there were a diesel Wrangler Rubicon being sold today, I'd be buying one.

Well the new Highlander is actually a bit bigger than the 4Runner or FJC in terms of interior space, so it pretty much has become a true midsize SUV and can easily take over that role in the line up. It can even tow up to 5000 lbs, and it's 4WD system should be sufficient for most road going folks in snow and the occasional dirt road. With the new spunky 3.5 V6 it is also damn quick.

So it will be interesting to see what happens. Maybe we will get the next gen Prado rebadged as a FJC or 4Runner, and hopefully they beef it up more for offroad as well. If they make it too luxo it will get too close to the Land Druiser though, so maybe strip down the iterior in put the $$$ into the chassis and drivetrain :D

At least I can dream :D

The new prado coming soon in 2009 ( 2010 model ) aren't more off road orientes .. actually gonna be much more on road and sucker mall oriented ..

Based on the talks on the FJCruiserforums and the correspondance from Toyota, there are no official plans to discontinue the FJC...

just here to dispel rumors...
