With the 255/85/16's the tire width would be a little narrower then 275/70/16 but that doesn't mean you would have less rubber on the road. Wouldn't it just mean that the contact patch would be a different shape since the 255/85/16's are a larger tire? The contact patch would be determined by the tread width as a % of the aspect ratio, since the aspect ratio is so much larger you should have more rubber on the road with the 255/85/16 tire, just a different shape too the contact patch.

I don't think it's that cut & dry. The tire patch will also be determined by the sidewall strength of the tire and of course pressure. Given equal sidewalls and pressure I don't know if I'm still conviced it would be equal surface contact area.

Your right, I did further research. Tire pressure can have a big affect. Also the manufactures warn agains't ever going over 3% larger dia. since it can cause brake failure?? Also the thread is a big factor, MT's and AT's with large voids will have a smaller contact area. I'm sure Toyota built in some allowance, since no one has reported brake failure running 285/75/16's. My 265/75/16's have a 3% smaller width and a 1.5% larger dia. so I think I'm in the safety zone but I am also running AT's so that is also a factor and I run 40 psi. Have not noticed any handling problems since with LT tires you need to run more PSI (bigger range then the stock 275/70/16 passenger car tires that come on the LC).

I think you can stop worrying...

My 38.5" tires are 75% larger than the tires than came on my '74 FJ40, and stock discs are working just fine. :cool:

Wow, your FJ40 came with 22" tires? That's 2" smaller than the ones on a mini cooper!

Not sure how things go over there, but if you are in an accident and the tyres on your vehicle ar not as wide as stock, that is less tread on the road meaning less stopping power...
A wider tire will give you better lateral grip on dry roads. A taller tire will give you better traction when braking and accelerating.

Yes, tire construction and sidewall strength play a part in this but in general, formula racing cars will have relatively wide and short diameter tires for better lateral grip (cornering) while drag racing cars will have relatively tall and narrow tires for longitudinal grip (accelerating).

29/38.5=.75x100%= 75%

I think you need to retake finite math. :flipoff2:
29" diameter stock size
50% larger would be 29" x 1.50 =43.50"

75% larger than 22" is:
22"x1.75=38.5"

I see you are still in school. Get back to me when/if you graduate. :flipoff2:

Ouch, Bailey he's gotcha on this one. You are running tires that are 133% larger than stock. 29*1.32758 = 38.5

Just an inverse relation off. Just flip your divisor :D or raise to the power of -1 or whatever you want. tabraha is correct in stating that 75% bigger than 29" ~= 51"

Worse mistakes have been made at major companies all over the world causing massive restating of revenue :)
