I am looking into the "idea" of fitting somethink like portal drop boxes to me 80 series.

I seem to remember reading they someone made them to bolt stright on to the LC axle. But I cannot find where I have read it. I have done a search, but can only find Unimog or Volvo info.

I want to keep the Toyota axles as I have FF lockers.

hmm not sure that anyone makes LC drop boxes

Maxidirve made LR drop boxes which would have been pretty close to fitting on to Cruiser axles- can't find a link thought

Marks4wd do boxes for Nissan GQ - not cheap though Nissan Portals

would probably b possible to butcher up a set of 303 portals and use them- i know that my Mog 404 portals would never work though!

If you are able to get some portal boxes to mate up to your existing axels, then more power to you, but both Mog and Volvo axels are commonly available with lockers also. It would probably be a lot cheaper and less of a headache to just swap in some Volvo axels. However, if you do keep your Toyota axels and mate up some portal boxes, you are required to do a thread following your buildup! Just because I wouldn't go that route doesn't mean I don't want to watch someone else do it.

That is a lot, but its just an "idea" right now. But with the cost of portal axles and the time to make them fit. I think its still worth looking into.

I am almost sure it was an Austrila web site I was reading it on.

As I said I am sure someone did make them. To me there would be a market for them at the right price.

Also with Volvo ones I would have to add the cost of converting to disk from the drums.

It would be cool to do but most likely pricey.

On a side note I lived in shropshire till I was five and I was born in Bridgenorth..... its amazing how small this world is.

Not that far away from me :).

Just a note, adding portals to Landcruiser axles you are going to be looking at pretty significant gear reduction. I don't think you could make that setup very streetable.

Toyota portals are not yet ready. Nissan portals seems to be very expensive.

Gearmaster portal axle

Yes theres a link to that site in the 2nd post.

But I know I did read about some been fitted. But for the life of me I can not remember where.

On LR4x4 there is a chap called Bushie65 (also on Outerlimits and Pirate) who built his own- i "think" he used cruiser rear and Patrol rear. Perhaps you're thinking of him?

I don't think it was him. I am almost sure they were made by Toyota. I have done lots of searching, but can not find the web site. I cam across it when I was looking for a LC80. So it was about 12 months ago. The only thing I seem to recall is it was a Oz site.

You mean something like this? Granted, they are 40 series axles but the concept holds.

That's the sort of thing, but I am 99.9% certain they were just bolt on.

why don't you just do what tirediron did and replace the entire axle with a volvo portal axle that also have lockers in them? He just cut the mounting brackets off the original axle and welded them onto the volvo axle. Then attached arms/links just like original.

He said that he doesn't want to have to change the drums over to discs

I'm having problems viewing their website, but they have some sweet pics of Alan Podvin's 100 series w/portals.
