I got to remember not to assume anything. I read that somewhere (??) and it made sense so it stuck in my head!

2 points to Doug even though I won the tie!

-B- - here's more info for your list:

1. the LX has more sound-deadening material, making it somewhat quieter inside.

2. A correction: In the two model years the LX450 was produced ('96-97) the window tint was blue one year and bronze the other (maybe someone can fill in which year is which).

3. A note: the rear bumper step area is plastic on the LX. If you remove it, there is no aluminum step-plate, but one can be added and it will fit.

2. My 96 has mirrored bronze tint on all the rear glass and bronze on the driver/passenger doors, I think the windshield has a bronze hew to it also.

3. When I look from the bottom of my bumper I can see a large aluminum extrusion that looks like it may be the bottom of the step. I have not pulled the bumper skin off yet to look and see if the step is there. Could the early LX's still have the step?

Alaska,
Thanks for the updates. Doug first told me about the bronze tint and he has 2 '97's. Raven says his 96 has bronze. This indicates both years had bronze in some cases. What does your '97 have?

The parts catalog does not support the assertion that there are two different glass tints in LX450's. There is only one part number for each piece of glass, including the windshield, for all LX450's sold in the US.

The blue/bronze difference probably comes from 80 vs 450. the rear side door glass and the quarter glass and the back glass are the same between an 80 with third row seats and a 450 (execpt for the fixed LH rear quarter glass in a 450). The windshield and the front door glasses ARE different between a 450 and an 80. The 450 catalog calls the windshield "bronze" but does not say anything about the front door glass. Logic dictates that the front door glass is also "bronze" to match the windshield.
The 80 wndshield and front door glasses are a blue-green tint.

No need to back up C-Dan...

but just a point of clarification. I got the information regarding bronze vs blue from another forum member (Sean Staplin -- MTNRAT). He learned of the difference when he had to get his windshield replaced - he was asked if he wanted to Land Crusier blue or the LX 450 bronze glass. I learned of the difference from him while talking to him at CM05.

If a LX 450 has blue glass, it was probably a replacement. The fit should be identical.
As for the extra sound deadening -- I've read about this too, but have yet to find conclusive proof that the 96/97 LXs have more than the 95-97 LCs.

One other difference to note (that I didn't see listed yet) was the size difference of the rear bumper corner pieces and how that relates to the rear mud flaps. Because the corner pieces hang lower on the LX than the similar part on the LC does, the opening on the back of the mudflap - where it meets the bumper - is larger on the LX as compared to the LC. This is significant if you get an after market bumper (Slee/Hanna/4x4labs/Kaymar/TJM/etc.) The aftermarket bumpers are typically made to match the size of the LC bumper, not the LX. As a result, if you try to use the LX mudflap, you'll have an ugly 1.5 to 2 inch gap all around the bumper where it meets the mudflap. On the upside, the LC mudflap fits on the LX.

Good memory Doug. Yep it was bronze to replace the windshield in my 97 LX.
Cheers,
Sean

Thanks Doug for getting this post back on topic. Thanks to all for info provided . Iwill be going to loook at 97 LC with 105K tomorrow .and maybe a 97 40th aniversity.
Thanks Guys
Dan

This is from the Lexus official website:

Changes made to the '97 LX450s (as opposed to the '96s):
. Glass color is changed from Bronze to Green.
. 'Fulltime 4WD' badge is removed from the tail gate.

From the post above, it seems like the first statement is not true then.

sjcruiser,
You have a '97 LX. Is your glass Bronze or Green?

-B-

My glass looks pretty bronzy...:flipoff2: :D

sjcruiser- yup, that's where I got my info from. Lexus had the changes between model years posted on their website in the CPO vehicle models section back when the LX450 was available as a CPO vehicle. I've never actually verified that there are 2 different tints, but it seems odd that they'd go to the trouble of mentioning it as a model year change if it wasn't. I'll check mine and some others.

Beowulf,

I think mine is bronze as well.

If your's is bronze, Doug's are both bronze, and alaska has bronze then I'd say the Lexus web site is wrong.

I will change the differences list.

Beowulf,

LXs do not have 3rd row speakers so please make a note while you're at it!

Frank.

OK, thanks.

I wouldn't put alot of faith in the Lexus CPO info though. I read on thier site a few years ago how a '97 LX450 had three shoulder seatbelts for the 2nd row seat. That is not the case, at the time I e-mailed some contact person on there telling them that that was a flat out lie. I just looked and the LX450 isn't even listed in the CPO model library, but maybe that's just because this dealership doesn't have any forsale...but I would take whatever they put in the CPO info with a grain of salt.
