Hi all,
Next month I'll start a few months trip in east-africa and I have an opportunity to buy a Landcruiser II RJ77, 2.4L petrol engine, manual, 1996 model (pics attached)

What do you think, should I go for it ? (My knowledge about the landcruisers is limited). a few questions:

- what's the fuel consumption of the petrol engine, is it thirsty (compared to the diesel ver.)?

- performance ? the small petrol engine seem a bit weak on paper

- How do you compare it to a Mitsubishi Pajero diesel/petrol from the same age-group ? The prices are similar, so what would be a
better buy ?

- How do compare it to Toyota Surf diesel 1990-1997 models

The fuel consumption worried me the most .

Many Thx

It looks very original and a great project. The full roof rack and 2nd tyre could be removed and installed when required. That will help with economy, performance and wind noise.

Being a 4 cylinder petrol it will be sluggish and thirsty with that big body, but a small supercharger could improve performance, especially with a good sports exhaust?

A Pajero will be more powerful, faster and handle better on road.....but Mitsi engines dont last as long (smoke early) Mitsi's also have a monocoque construction where as the Toyota has a ladder chassis.

The ladder chassis is much stronger if you plan offroading. Toyota are more expensive but have better resale.

I would search out a diesel if possible, but I love diesels :bounce: but that vehicle has alot of potential what ever you use it for.

Just get a Toyota familiar mechanic to do a compression test, check the transfer case, diffs and CVs. If you start doing repirs to any of these items it can get costly

Good luck !

I think its a good choice.
The diesel engine in these earlier models were prone to head problems and the Surfs have the same engine.
The non turbo diesels were less problematic
The R petrol engine is renowned for longevity.
Most owners report low to mid 20s mpg .

My 2nd choice would be a Mitsy turbo diesel.

As for speed, how good are the roads in E Africa? You will probably find your wagon more than adequate
