dear all,
i have just bought a used 2009 landcruiser diesel twin turbo 4.5 and am planning to do some enhancements like chip, exhuast, air filter. since the car is purchased in middle east (Kuwait) it has the 200 4.5 / Power: 235 PS (173 kW / 232 bhp) / Torque: 615 Nm (454 lbf/ft) / V8 (Twin System). not like the ones sold in Europe or Australia they have the 200 4.5 / Power: 286 PS (210 kW / 282 bhp) / Torque: 650 Nm (479 lbf/ft) / V8 (Twin System). if that makes any diffrence.
Kindly advise
Ali

I would have thought that all you need do, since it has the twin turbos, is to chip it to take it up to maybe 350hp/700Nm?
The manual transmission versions are downrated, probably due to the ability of the gearbox to handle the torque, so be careful if yours is a manual gearbox version.

You'll get very limited results from air filter and exhaust, the latter is especially non-cost effective. Only big power gains from chipping it, but if you do so do not look to go for the biggest power jump you can get as reliability will suffer.

pretty much interested in see how that goes .. under the impression that there is huge room for improvement powa on those engine .. single ( 70 series ) and twin turbo .

I will take your advise and chip it only with
http://www.chipexpress.com/
Its double the price of Unichip but i guess its worth it. Any other advice on chip Brand?

Hi aliq80,

I have a 2009 LC200 4.5 diesel and have installed a chip from Chip-It Australia (Add 50% MORE Power - Diesel Engine Tuning - Diesel Performance Power Chips) and 3" mandrel bent exhaust from Beaudesert Exhaust. The chip lists for AUS$899. I would say that I'm very satisfied with the result. Gone is the sluggish feel and with the 3" exhaust you can feel that the turbo spools up faster. I'm located in Manila, Philippines and the local version of the LC200 V8 diesel list the power output at 282hp.

Do you know somebody who have any experience with the Chipexpress chip ? I also have a 2006 LC100 4.2TD that I would also like to put a chip on. The Chipexpress price is quite attractive as compared to the Chip-It. A commnet from a Chipexpress user would be a big help before deciding.

Regards,

Nonong

Hi nonong,
Thank you for your comments, no i don't know anyone who used the chipexpress but they are the only company with chip for GCC(Gulf) spec. Regarding your exhaust does it matter if our cars steering are on the left side for installing the exhaust?

Hi aliq80,

It does not matter whether the steering is on the left or right with the Beaudesert Exhaust. I think it will be the same for the other brands as well. I have attached a picture of the system.

Most diesel engine plug-in chip boxes just plug in to the common-rail pressure sensor. All they do is cheat the system to raise the pressure of fuel in the common rail and therefore at the injector which ensures extra fuel is injected. It probably costs about a Dollar to make plus the connectors.
The other type, such as the Steinbauer premium range, plug into each injector and this type is more sophisticated and more expensive to produce. These don't raise the rail pressure but do increase the duration of each injection of fuel.

A re-map of the vehicle's own ECU can modify both parameters and much more. The whole management map can be modified to achieve any desired result. For this reason a good re-map would be my choice.

my question would be .. if they just raise the fuel pressure .. what happen with the boost .? thought remains as stock .. then why not modify that too ..

The boost pressure is probably computer controlled on these engines. At least one of the turbochargers is almost certainly a variable-vane type which is a type generally controlled by a stepper motor controlled by an ECU. Not sure of the specifics of this engine but there is often an ECU and precision controller built into the turbo housing.
An engine ECU re-map would be needed to alter the control parameters for this type of unit.

Hi Nonong,

Very interesting. Im also from Manila and been thinking of getting a 200 with the V8 diesel. Just confused between the locally distributed units by Toyota or the import Dubai units. Both seem to share the same engine. Ride quality is the issue for me (currently using a 100 with AHC and extremely happy) and they say that the Dubai GXR units ride softer than the local ones due to different coil springs. And just by looking, the local 200 seems taller and has that obvious rake. Im also not a big fan of the nav system and just want to keep things as simple as possible. Just want to know if you were able to compare these units when you got yours.

Thanks in advance and apologies to aliq80 for going off-topic.

Hi lpj23,

Mine is the local version released by Toyota Phils. My main consideration then was the engine's output as I plan to take the 200 for long road trips with the whole family. They do have the same engine but the Dubai version's output is listed at 232hp while that of the local version is listed at 282hp. I didn't like the GXR's instrumentation and steering wheel without the buttons. This is quite important for me for long drives. I also didn't like the GXR's chrome trimmings and stepping board. Take note that it was back in 2009 when I made these observations and I'm not sure what the recent upgrades are for both versions. Sorry can't help you with the ride issue. Either version, you won't be wrong with the 200.

Holy crap! You guys get TWIN TURBO DIESEL engines in your LC's!
You guys actually get ENGINE OPTIONS!
I just found this out today. Damn near 500 lbs of torque with 261 HP getting 23 MPG combined hwy/city driving. I just about had a stroke..... All we get in the US is ONE engine option. And its the wrong one....
I'm moving.
Thats it.
I'm moving to Australia so I get to play with better engines.

It's not all roses here in Australia. A 200 with a lower spec than that of the US ( no memory seats, no no high end Hifi, etc) is about $120K USD, and the Petrol is still the 4.7l, soon to be the 4.6l as per the Japan spec. At least the Petrol is $10K cheaper.

And don't forget your steering wheel is on the wrong side.... Silly old prison colony. J/K. I guess we are actually lucky here in the UAE You can pick up a LHD mid option GX/GXR for export in the $60k price range

If you ever want to import a RHD look into a company called motorplus.net they are based in turkey but have a stock yard in Dubai usually have a decent stock of ax and axg

As I understand it Toyota ECU's lately haven't been cracked and can't yet be remapped by anyone outside Toyota. This leaves you with the plug in tuning boxes and rail pressure foolery. Not as good and nowhere near the safegaurds or fine control but they do work.

I run a Chip-it, works a treat. You can select between two tunes on the run and change tunes easily via your PC/Laptop. It still runs under the OEM's safeguards, so exceed any and you car will go into limp mode. The chip can also modify boost pressure and run external systems (like Petrol and/or Gas injection etc).

Mine is set on an average (moderate) tune and is well over 800 nm, feels like a different car!
