Price for axle seal replacement?

Charging me $350 to have the inner axle seals changed. The seal on the back of the diff is the one I assumed was leaking. How much would it cost at $65/hr to replace the paper seal on the back of diff?

To change the seal on the back of the diff (opposite cover) is quite a PITA - you have to completely disassemble the birfs, pull the axles, then pull the diff out the back (after pulling the drive shaft etc.). Then it all has to be put back together - read a birf repack thread if you need to know what's involved. Even if you reuse your bits..it all has to be cleaned and re-packed. If Edwin replaced your inner axle seals...they needed it.

Sounds like a bargain to me?

I'm not complaining I'm just making sure I'm not getting screwed out of my money. I'm a college student with a low budget so I just wanted to try and make sure I don't do somethign thats not needed. They're changing the paper seal on the back of the differential, and their getting at the inner axle seals. Said it should take them 5 1/2 hours to complete.

Seals should costs like $20 for both of them (ball park figure). the most would be $350, Sean told me.

I'm not complaining I was wondering what other people spent to have this done on their 80. The guys there have been very honest and cool with me so any more work I need done to the truck it's going to them.

$350 is a screaming deal to replace the axle seals. Add another hour or so labor to do the diff gasket. Have them put some permatex on it, too.

$350 is a great deal on the inner axle seals. However, one of the classic screwups many have had on their 80s is the mechanic's version of the "inner axle seal" is different from the real inner axle seal. Many mechanics feel the triple seals on the steering knuckle (felt/rubber/steel) where the grease is coming from is the problem. So they replace only these. The REAL inner axle seal is the problem and it lies deeper into the axle - requiring the axles be pulled all the way out to access it. If the job is properly quoted for THIS service it's a deal. Of course they may simply be charging you that amount as they already have to pull the axles and the seal is right in front of their face. If that's the case, it's an outrageous ripoff to quote $350 extra to replace a $15 seal that takes an extra 10 mins a side. So, you tell us if it's a deal or not as you've presumably got the full job quoted on paper.

The guys at LCS are all Cruiserheads - I'm sure they're just changing the inner axle seals because they realized they needed it when removing the axles. Edwin is the type of guy who will explain to you how to fix something out in the parking lot when checking out your problem....without making a dime.

He replaced my rear diff and drive shaft on my 40 a year ago when we realized it had a mid-fifties Chevy third member rigged in it. I walked out for under $500 with third member (which he had to pull from the front of a parts rig), drive shaft, new seals/gaskets and labor. Don't think anyone else would have done it for that.....

Umm...WHAT?? You had a Chevy diff in the Toy housing? I know Chevy and Toy share some parts but I've never heard of that combination. Still had Toy axles?

I have seen a FJ40 with a Chevy V8, auto tranny and a driveshaft that went diagonal to the rearend, no t/c or driveshaft to the front..oh and it had 110-volt outlets on the OUTSIDE of the vehicle, in normal house weatherproof outlets mounted in the hardtop...kinda like a mini-RV...only very redneck-ish and rusted beyond belief.

That's exactly what I said! Supposedly for a couple of years in the mid-fifties Chevy made a drop out third member - that apparently works in a LC axle housing. I was having all kinds of trouble w/ my pinion seal leaking - and replaced it w/ a new seal the PO gave me when I bought the truck (so he had to be the fawker that did it). When this didn't fix the leak I took it to LCS...and he tried to replace it w/ an OEM seal (which didn't fit of course). We started looking at it and sure enough it didn't look anything like the front diff...and the drive shaft was welded to mate up with the different flange.

The PO of my '76 was quite the jack a$$ - I've had to redo almost everything he "fixed" on the truck!

Guys at LCS have been awesome with me. I will definatley take my 80 back to them. Edwin or Sean, said that the third member had looked like it had been taken out. I rememberd that I had taken the truck to get gear oil put in and the bolts were loose on the back of the diff so I asked them to tighten them. In doing so they TOOK OUT THE GASKET that goes on the third member and the front diff. Makes sense b/c I remember when leaving that they were saying I'd bring it back to us as soon as possible to fix it. Going to cost you at least 200-300 dollars to have that fixed.

I'll be going down there during they're busy time and walk int he shop and start yelling about how they scrwed me with this...I'm sure that will help there buisness..

Pisses me off, hate getting cheated.

Who did you take it to that did this ... from what you wrote it sounds like LCS, but I remember you saying you took it somewhere else first?

LCS is who I've taken it to get the leak fixed. They've been awesome with me, they didn't try and pull anything b/c I'm a young kid like this shell Station I took it to to have gear oil put in. The bolts were loose on the back of the differential and they told me this so i asked them to tighten them, Sean from lcs said that someone had taken off the third member and taken off the gasket....

Meaning that the shell station either did it w/o knowing, or they did it so I would come back and get it fixed by them..

Maybe I am wrong but I thought the only way you can remove the third is by first pulling the axel shafts. This would be a lot of additional work for them to do. I am guessing who even pulled the third never re-installed the gasket. I would defiantly continue to check the bolts on your third and make sure they are tight. Since now this is the second time they have loused up on you.

My 80 is not going back to the shell station for ANY work. Land Cruiser Speacialists is where my LC will taken from now on.

Just got my rig back from LCS, f***ing awesome job they did. Cost me 378 for inner axle seals changed, gasket replaced, birfs repacked. They did a great job on my truck. If your near Austin I'd definatley take your 80 to them.

$378 is a bargain and about $1000 less than you'd pay at most dealerships.

you may want to say " f-ing" or "f#@k" or duck instead of that word on the 80's board.
its ok (i think) on the chit chat board to use that language.

Ya, I mentioned the price they quoted at the dealership to Edwin (owner) and he was like jeeze we just did all that for $400. Very very pleased with their work and I might end up going on a offroad trip with em :flipoff2:

Nyk,
I'll agree with Kurt that we do expect more mature language in the 80 section. I have the 'censor' turned on in my forum options so all I read in your post was "#%@^ing awesome."

I think you'll find it's more effective here in the technical sections to communicate with carefully chosen words rather than profanity.
