While we’re on the topic of cruise control, anyone considered an aftermarket install? On the surface, it doesn’t look too bad. Few other projects ahead of me but I’m considering putting it in the queue

Cruise control is the one option I always wish my truck had.
You and me both. Hello from Queen Creek AZ. I have had several 90 series and have more coming. Finally getting a 5 speed with locker, but still no CC or heated seats? I was hoping the seats warmers were there and just the switches needed to be installed. I think the next generation of engines, maybe 2001? will have the CC built in. Meanwhile, the 1KZ-TE is my favorite engine. I get 18 mpg in town and 23 on longer trips. Love the 90 series.

I'm going to try to keep this post updated with my actual spend on this project, including part numbers and sources. I hope this can help others who are looking at the 90 platform.

This thread is my go-to every time! Thank you so much for the detailed write-up. Any recommendations on an alternator? New from Japan is $1K.

That's awesome to hear! I'm glad to be able to help. I've since sold the Prado (we moved and I lost my wrenching and parking space).

Are you 100% sure the alternator actually needs replacing?

When I got mine, I thought the alternator was going bad and went through the same travails - there aren't good options and a replacement from Japan is a mint. My issue ended up being the alternator belt, not the alternator itself- the 1KZ runs two belts in parallel and they can slip imperceptibly. The belt replacement was a far sight cheaper!

If you're sure it's the alternator and you can park the truck for a few weeks, my plan was to pull the alternator and see if my local NAPA could send it off to Cardone for a rebuild. That's what we used to do with old motorcycles when parts were out of production, and I've been surprised more than once at what Cardone could do.
