Land Cruiser 200 longevity? How far will it go!

Hi all,

I own a 2014 fj cruiser and am looking to purchase a second hand cruiser for our lake house on the farm. My question to you folks is how many miles would folks expect to get on your 200 before thinking of a engine rebuild. I see the average 2009 vehicle has 150,000miles on them. Is this considered "low" milage?
 
My 91 80 series just turned 29 years old and still runs like it is 1991. My LX570 has covered 86K miles in last 4 years with out a single mechanical issue. Get one and enjoy over landing for decades.
 
How deep your pockets? Any car can easily be a million miles car depending on how deep your pockets are and that it doesn't get crashed.
 
For me, the engine is the least of my concerns. The 5.7L has proven to be a highly durable and low stress design, so long as it's not taken out by some unexpected coolant leak/overheat or water ingestion situation. Even if that were to occur, it's an easy and relatively cheap component to source with all the Tundra and Sequoias out there. I believe it's the same for the transmission too.

With all the complexity of designs today, I'd place my bets that a failure is more likely in some electronic part rather than mechanical. It used to be that we were sold on "solid state, no moving parts" as a case for electronics durability. Yet I'm seeing that it's the electronics that often won't stand the test of time when its measured in decades++. Capacitors dry out over decades and fail. Mechanicals are typically DIY easy enough to source and fix. Many of the electronics are specific to the model and can be more expensive to source.
 
Thank gents appreciate you sharing your experience! The electronics of the 200 land cruiser is definitely a concern. My fj cruiser 2014 has very little in the way of electronics which is why I love it. The vehicle I'm looking at is a 2011 with 100kmiles on the clock for under 30k seems like alot of car for 30k and it is a cruiser so I expect the mechanics to keep goi g for quite some time. Have you all had electrical issues with the 200 series 2008 and up?

Sorry if I may have suggested doubt for 200 series electronics. They've proven to be well developed and durable. If I trust any electronics, it's Toyotas. And 200 series electronics.

I was more speaking to general concerns long term. For the whole generation of modern cars really that will become classics one-day.

Much much less confidence in European electronics.

The 200 mechanicals, electronics, and systems are all extremely robust and sound.
 
When I got my 80 a major thing that made me nervous was the all-electronic AC system. I figured those parts would start to get tired and be very difficult for the aftermarket to copy. Lots of servos to fail, modules, etc. And yet even those with 30 years on them aren’t failing at a significant rate..

TBH the only thing that has me concerned with my 200 is the infotainment system. That is a lot of complexity and integration (AC controls, for example) that could be difficult to repair if things go sideways.

I’ve been patiently waiting for people to ramp up the hacking of toyota systems like they have for GM.. it’s crazy what they can do with GM body control modules now (making dash lights flicker as a shift light, etc) and will only take the right person getting interested in the same stuff on toyota.
 
While the 200 undoubtably has more electronics than previous generations, I wouldn't call it "electronics-heavy." Have a look at any modern Mercedes/BMW, or even a VW, and you'll see what I mean.

It has always seemed to me that Japanese automakers were behind the Germans in terms of electronic goodies, and that was intentional. The Germans throw the coolest new tech into their vehicles and essentially make themselves (or rather, their customers) guinea pigs for that tech. Some 8-10 years later, the Japanese look at what worked, what didn't, and what consumers want, and then introduce the same tech to their vehicles.

I'm not worried about the electronics in my LX. All of the tech on this vehicle is relatively "old news," tried & true. Exceptions can always occur, but they won't be the norm.
 
292k and still humming here. No issues yet, except for a coolant leak in the low 200s.

Overdue for some "preventative" maintenance, and ready for a suspension upgrade. I'm taking her to 400k at least.

Good phone. I guess I should be a little skeptical when I see AT&T because AT&T calls something 5G when it's not. They did the same thing years before with 4G and calling their systems 4G when it wasn't actually an LTE system.
