Ran seafoam two nights agone and an oil leak that was causing me concern just got alot worse. I found a considerable pool of dark fluid beneath where the engine and transmission meet. I checked the transmission level and it was fine. Could this be the rear main seal?

I suppose the options are a quart of oil every day or two or replacing the RMS. Clutch while I'm at it?

Did you run the seafoam in the crankcase? Did you pull off the cover under the clutch to take a better look?

It sounds like a rear main seal. I would do the cluth unless it is new.
 
To be honest, I don't think sea foam is the best thing to put in your crankcase.

...I'm waiting for everyone to bash me on this, but.. it thins out the oil, cleans up all the gunk that is helping keep the gaskets sealed, loosens up all the crap so it can be put in the oil circulation, warps, shrinks, and f's-up gaskets, etc.

I have seen many posts on MUD that have reported leaks after a seafoam etc. crankcase solvent treatment.

If my oil looks clean when it comes out of the oil pan, then I'm satisfied.

There is no performance or anything gained by using a seafoam treatment in the crankcase. IMHO.

However, I have used it with success in the gas tank. Go figure.

I wont bash ya,I agree 100%. A shop told me that this often happens when you put engine cleansers in an old motor.
It can increase the blow by to the point where thje engine is no longer serviceable.
Even using a thinner oil to flush the engine can cause problems.

Not trying to be a wise ass, but, what do you think your cleaning when you pour this stuff in your engine?

don't you ever use fresh oil and change the filter?

Challenge you to find a review on these Oil additives (engine/tranny) that says they help. Of course the makers of this stuff say it works, find where a engine manufactorer or top mechanic or tech magazine says any of this stuff does anything.

Gas additives if strong enough will break down h2o in the tank and clean jets.

How does a additive go lthrough the oil filter and strip anything from your interior of your engine. How does it do that and not strip the lubercation from every thing? Heat up your oil with that stuff in it and it would seem the oil would be ruined (if it does "strip" "sludge or what ever else you think is in there hurting your performance on a f series (2or 3) engine.

Hey I'm a old guy, just a wondering where you youngsters have heard this stuff works.
 
In the above post I use the word "YOU" to cover not the previous post but the whole scope of folks pouring snake oil in their rigs.

Didn't want to seem too harsh on a post that I pretty much agree with.
 
As with most questions of this sort I find myself in the position of inexperience who must trust the experience, practice and wisdom (or lack thereof) of others. In this particular case I have chosen to go with those who've used and had good experiences with Seafoam. I will see in time whether or not it was a good decision. Such is the lot of a new mechanic dependant upon lots of different, often conflicting advice from various sources. I have to sift manuals, posts, pasts threads, the advice of friends and then draw my own conclusions. For my part I'm not much interested in the debate or strong opinions for or against seafoam. Experiences are valuable. So far I've only read of one bad one.

Of course we all rely on information, that is what I am asking for. most of what I've read on the forums say "it just felt better" after using this or that...
My rig "feels" better when I wash it.
 
update

After a week of tweaking, reading, asking questions and listening to different views of seafoam I am up and running again.

I: put in new plugs
adjusted timing and idle
ran seafoam and changed the oil to 20-w50(thanks euclid).
replaced a busted vacumm hose
adjusted the valve clearances
plug wires and distributor are also relatively new

the results, so far are better accelorator response, the pinging (valve chatter?) is gone and there is noticably more power going uphill. The leak is the same as it was pre-Seafoam. I believe it is mainly due to thinning of the oil(thanks lowtideride). The source is primarily a bent drain plug hole (time for a new oil pan--some P.O. Hit a rock or banged too hard on a stuck plug)

I can't say whether Seafoam has played a role in these improvements. Probably the timing/idle/new plugs and recent valve adjustment did most of it.

I'm going to hold off on Seafoam in the crankcase for awhile until I trace down and seal up some of my leaks and gather more information (thanks to HighDesert).

Thanks to all who provided input in helping a newbie mechanic learn some basic stuff. Some of it was useful.:) My machine is definately running better and I have learned alot.

if you put seafoam in after you put new plugs in pull them and see if they need to be cleaned up. ( 5 & 6 would be the worst if pulled in thru a vac line. good luck brotha.

Thanks. I changed the oil acouple days after I ran the seafoam. Then I changed the plugs.
