Hey, Aaron.

I was wondering if I could get those GPS waypoints from your August long weekend trip to CL, I think Steve and I are going to head up that way with his ATV and trailer. It sounds like the easier way for us. llum11@shaw.ca

Thanks.

There is a trail coming in from Boston Bar and heading North East, ending up South of Cabin lake and joining up with Spius FSR and then up to Cabin. I don't know the condition of it, Martin is sure he was on it heading West but encoutered a trail that he didn't want to try solo. I don't know if it was this one or not. So, that said, I don't know the condition of the trail, on the maps, and google earth it looks fine, there is one section which is not visible due to trees and that might be the problem spot. If that fails then we will back track to Uztlius FSR and take that East until Spius and then up to Cabin Lake.

The road was thickly grown in the way all coastal roads get around clearcuts after a few years. When I started up the trail it was after 2pm on Sunday. I pushed through it for about 1km until I got my bearings as to location. Map book showed us being a fair distance from reaching the crest and the descent to Boston Bar. I wasn't worried about scratching the trucks paint so much as watching the time, we made the decision to turn around to get home at a reasonable hour. Who knows, might have been totally passable.

This BC4x4 trip report indicated they got up into the Spius drainage from Boston Bar before turning back because of snow.
BC4x4.COM four wheel drive, 4x4, offroad and fourwheeling site.
Another reference that avoided the route but only to save time.

We are planning on bringing Steve's ATV and trailer w/36's on it. How are trails like going up to Cabin Lake? Would it be wise towing a trailer, I hear there is a bowl and sloped section, that might be a problem?

Should be fine.

Would if I could but all of my GPS stuff is on my computer that is in the shop. Before the problem I did send my GPS tracks as a kml file to Fantom and Scalp. This has all of the details. Maybe one of them could send it to you if you are still interested in the route I took.

Mat or Bill??

As for myself on the weekend I plan on doing the Harrison/Pemberton run with side trips along the way. I will try to get to Tipela or even Sloquet by dark on Friday.

Spius

According to
ttp://www.turtlepetprojects.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57:conair&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=78

"We left Boston Bar with our teams in place and headed towards Cabin Lake. Based on the backroads map books the most logical road to take would be Spious, but we strongly believe there is a wash out along this road. In Nov of 2007 we attempted to take that route coming from the East side and ran across a road that even the snowmobiles weren’t going through that was becoming overgrown with willows. To date we have not attempted it from the West side and welcome updates on it."

Thanks.

I've already sent Aaron's KML file to Steve... I'm not having much luck in converting it into a Garmin track file...

Thanks for the info guys. I forgot that Aaron waypoints were done on another program.

it loads into Google Earth

As Glenn says it works in Google Earth and from there you can easily pick off the key waypoints for the way in from the Coq.

Looks like I'm going to bow out of this trip... Just got my replacement parts for my suspension this evening and still need to install them and start cutting to make room for 35's that I am hoping to have installed on Saturday. I'll probably spend the rest of the weekend with a hammer and grinder fine tuning the fit:hillbilly: I will keep my laptop close by so I can web wheel with you.

since you're not going, you can wait and come over the next weekend and I'll quickly modify it with the plasma cutter for you :D

Every report I've seen people kept talking about not doing the trail due to time (as mentioned) or snow, that is the reason why I want to head up there. If it fails, we can turn around and take the other route, regardless, bring chainsaws and shovels because it might get fun.

I am coming over on the 7:00 am ferry and meeting Bill and Gary T at Rickies in Chilliwack at 10:30 Friday after fueling up at Lickman (barring traffic screw-ups on Hwy 10 and a Friday before a long-weekend!).

Forecast is for rain so things should get interesting this trip.

When do people (Matt et.al.) think they will in Boston Bar? Its about 100 km from Chilliwack to Boston Bar our trailhead. If we don't eat at Rickies we could be at Boston Bar about 12:30, but if you guys are beelining it to Spius FSR and getting to Boston Bar way before that, well -- we may as well eat in Chilliwack.

We could get some slushy snow up at the higher elevations, and it will be cold at night.
Also, don't be surprised if the road on the Garmin GPS is out of date and now obliterated by clearcut logging. We may have to hunt for a route into Cabin Lake. Not advisable to try this on a rainy night in the dark.

is that from both directions?
witch direction is the more basic rout?
how long of a drive from coldwater exit?

Hasta la vista, baby !!

If we (bill,Gary T. and Glenn) eat at Rickies we should be around Boston Bar area and the trailhead 1:00-2:00 PM or so --look for 3 BJ74s - (the 74 Team). We will look for other cruisers coming along - we are on CB channel 4. Signing out for now...

The route from the Coq has been tried before and is easier and more straight forward to follow. Unitl you get closer to the lake form what Aaron and Martin have told us, there is some screwing around in that area. The Spius trail we (early team :D ) are taking might be passable or it might not. We will put up marks which way we went (if I can find my yellow tape). If we backtrack to the other trail we'll mark it so those coming in later can follow. As usual, be prepared for any kind of weather and trail conditions.

too bad but i'm gonna miss this trip, thanks kim for the offer, i gotta work this weekend and new tires are ordered andlooking at rims now

have a blast guys and take lots of pics
