In some other thread I promised to take a couple pics showing the differences between 2L 2L-2 2L-T 2L-T-2 2L-TEengines. Here's what I have. From what I've seen so far the block is very similar, if not identical between early and late generation engines. The main difference is the cam activation style with either rocker arms on 2L and 2L-T vs. direct activation on 2L-2 2L-T-2 and 2L-T-E. Consequently the camshaft sits much higher on the late style engines, and the timing cover shape changes dramatically, as well as the head cover (stamped steel vs. cast aluminium on the older models.)

1985 2L engine retrofitted with 1988 2L-T parts and 1990+ 2L-T-2 turbo :

The infamous 2L-T-E EGR and butterfly crap (retrofitted with a mech. pump) and

Yeah but the light duty brigade will get their jollies:D

Nice front views showing what a PITA changing the timing belt on a 2LT/2LTE is compared to the 1HD-T and the 1KZT. Also extracting the electronic fuel pump is also a pain if the engine is still in the vehicle.

Nice pictures, engines not dirty enough though.

The light mud coating helps showing any leaks much better than a fresh shiny black paint job :D

like rolling in flour to find the wet spot............... ;)

2L-T-1

on the 2nd pic you can see the block water temp sensor for the preheat computer and the water drain plug.
