Yeah I always thought The Republic of California was the worst state. Well at least it doesn't have to meet smog specs...

Yeah - California, bad for smog but really quite forgiving in other ways. I lived in Missouri (KC) years ago and it was a lot worst - safety inspections, "city sticker" tax, etc. etc. You can pay $50 for a really nice crusier here.

Crazy stuff....in CA, I just tell them what I bought it for....(I say almost nothing) and pay a little tax..:-)
Check NADA classic for values...I was just redoing insurance stuff for my 74' and the middle value, for a 'nice example, maybe an older resto or very well taken care of original', it was $16000! A REALLY nice one was said to be worth up to $25k. That's what my ins. company(USAA) looks at for replacement value.... That was good news....of course I'm probably only a few thousand away from having that into it now...:-).

I lived in CT for a few years and was completely shocked that there are states that charge property tax on vehicles!!! I live in Oregon where I drove to the DMV to title transfer/register and it cost the fee for each with zero tax, etc. Since I live outside of Portland I have no smog issues. You guys are really making me happy to live in a state that, while crazy sometimes, isn't insane!

Side note: how can a state get away with charging property tax on a vehicle?!

KY not only charges you yearly property tax on the vehicle, but they collect 6% sales tax on the vehicle every time it is sold, and every time it is sold the new owner pays registration and all the other recording fees! Sweet deal for the state...:censor:

I paid around $30 for two year registration on my 809 FJ62. That's the same as for an FJ40. When my 68 FJ40 was registered in Maricopa county I had to run it thru emissions every year. The emissions fees were as high as the registration. Now that I don't have to register is where I have to have emissions I can register it for two years for around $30. Before it cost my double. I have at least ten cruisers that I don't register and pay nothing. Years ago AZ tried the tax private sales, Dropped it pretty quick since everybody was saying they sold it for far less than the real sale price. You buy from a dealer you pay around 8% sales tax depending on the city you buy in.

My property taxes on my home on 5 acres in KY is approx. $1900 per year.

Yeah I lived in Atlanta for 5 years. Same deal on the property taxes. Problem is though the school system sucked, the infrastructure was falling apart, and the police were not getting paid enough to care about the crime because the government lacked the money to pay for any of these services. As much as I don't like the crazy taxes here, I also realize that it is the reason we have great school systems here, our infrastructure is modern and well cared for, and there is a cop every five feet looking to give you a ticket for something or other.

True story, when I was down in Atlanta I went over a guys house to pick up some parts. Mind you he was a lawyer, had a house that was ridiculous in size, plus a second house the size of my current house that was his clubhouse. He had a total of about about 3 acres. He was also in the best and richest part of the Atlanta area. Well him and his buddy are sitting out back at the clubhouse when I go to pick up the parts and we all sit down on the porch of his clubhouse which has a stream running in front of it and start to drinking Old Rebel beer. After a little while him and his buddy try to convince me that the north is still making the south pay for the Civil War. Keep in mind again that this is a very successful highly educated lawyer. I asked him how and he said that the north was to blame for their really high taxes, like on his house and land. I asked him how much he paid in property tax for all of this to which he replied that I would be shocked to know that he was paying 1200 a year. For the first and only time in my life I did an involuntary spit take. I promptly got out my cell phone, called my parents on speaker phone and asked my mom how much land she owned and how much they paid in taxes. To which she replied, a little bit less than 1/4 an acre and about 5000 in taxes a year but that was very cheap for the area. It was at this point that they did a spit take and that crazy conspiracy theory went out the window. :)

I went through this last year with my Mustang. You should go for the Historic tags. Don't worry about what the clerk's tell you. As far as I can tell, there's no enforcement. I'm running a '66 vintage tag with my Historic tag in the trunk. All perfectly legal.
