Would anyone be interested in a drawer replacement?

I'm working with Turtleback Trailers on their kitchens and I mentioned these awesome drawers Dave made. After some brain storming they are working on making a slide out unit that would fit one side. (Still just an idea)

I've included pics of their current setups.

Let me know if you would be interested in one. I have nothing to gain from this besides helping to create a cool concept on a awesome platform. If a few guys are interested I'll connect people and this can hopefully move forward!

Dave - thanks for creating a system that allows so much modification!

You aren't the first with the idea :) but full marks for initiative! I think a lot of people would be interested in an off-the-shelf solution.

KISS Drawers (Keep It Simple Storage) For 100 Series

As someone who has used a 50+lb chuck box quite a bit, my $0.02 advice is to construct it as light as possible (like 1/4" ply light if possible). Ideally it should be detachable from the vehicle, but with a "quick-access" mode.

Similar functionality to this:

Stowed Mode

Camp Mode (yes I camp at home sometimes, LOL)

Hey Whitenoise, we realize this has been done before we just figured it could a good solution for some.

I was thinking it would stay in the vehicle rather than slide all the way out and use legs. That way the weight would be less of a concern and stowing legs wouldn't be an issue.

Its still in the concept stage, but I will post here when we get a rendering.

I wasn't disparaging your attempt in any way, just pointing out that the fact its been done before validates how great of an idea it is!

Attaching permanently in the vehicle is great from a weight standpoint, but might suck for usability. Often times you want to cook and clean away from the vehicle, especially if you're sleeping in it. If you aren't on a level spot, things could get inconvenient.. Also, the tailgate height is nearly perfect, around 33-38" depending on AHC/tire size & lift for a 100 series. Adding 10" to that countertop height seems like you will increase fatigue for anyone under 6'5" or so?

A great material to use for either a drawer system or kitchen is corrugated plastic!
Corrugated Plastic sheets, panels, pads, rolls, Corrugated plastic sheeting, 2mm 3mm 4mm 6mm 8mm 10mm corrugated plastic sheeting, bins, single face corrugated plastic white clear plastic corrugated sheets
Advantages:
  • Really cheap
  • Many sizes and thickness
  • Bio friendly (okay for food prep, etc.)
  • Many colors
  • Extremely light (weight) but can be used as a defused skylight!
  • Extremely durable
  • Extremely strong
  • Water proof
  • Resistant to most all chemicals
  • Weather resistant
  • Easy to work with, just need a sharp knife, depending upon thickness
  • etc.
  • etc.
  • etc.
I've been considering this material for years, but haven't had the time to build with it. I'd be great for small camping tables, drawer systems, awnings, just let your imagination go!
I'm really surprised that no one else has latched on to this material!
