Hi all,
Any suggestions on where to get a couple extra key fobs for a 2009 tlc?
I see them on ebay and elsewhere.with varying prices..
My mechanic says he can program w techstream. Do the locksmiths need a copy of one of the original emergency hard keys to cut/copy the new one?
I want to stash a spare emergency hard key outside the truck, to be able to get in, and keep an extra fob in the interior wrapped in foil or in an rfid blocking case.

Dealers and even some locksmiths can cut a new key blank from a code they look up via your VIN, you'll just need to provide proof of ownership. I can't speak to the quality of aftermarket keys but personally I wouldn't trust anything but Genuine Toyota for something so important to the operation of the vehicle and needs to survive being banged around in a pocket, dropped on the ground, etc. Yes, they are expensive.. but factory keys just don't ever seem to have problems around here.

As for wrapping in foil.. the end of the key blade has a flat section designed to pry open the key case, so you could just as easily pull the battery out and tape it to the key, which would prevent the battery running running down while it isn't being used.

So normaly it is a pretty easy process with tech stream and if you got a blank key that rly fits your car (even for the 200s Toyota made alot of different versions so open it up and compare the board if it is rly 1:1 the same key as yours) and booting up the laptopnis the longest part….
Second option is the full key reset with the Vin that needs to be done with Toyota and the hash key - expensive option.

Option three is rewriting/edditing the eprom on the keyless entry ECU than can be accessed via the obd if you have the right tools or in the worst case needs to be removed from the board and reprogrammed since thats the place where the keys are stored.

I am at option three since I lost my second key and besides I got the same key from Partsouq I cant cant add the key normally with Techstream and also the Toyota dealer wasn’t able to do so.

I have 2 spare keys from a 2009 LC I don’t have anymore if you can reprogram them. The hard key has been cut

Update for future key teaching problems out there
Happy me it works.
So I learned something new. Your Land Cruiser will give you no(!) error code of any kind if one or more of your key oscillators inside the car is broken, disconnected or shortened and the car works flawlessly. BUT if one of them is missing you cannot teach a new key.
Was reading last night again - feels like thousand - websites regarding this topic on teaching new smart keys (mostly Prius but they are kinda the same) and one video I found mentioned the oscillators that are located in all your doors, the trunk and the three inside oscillators (one under your cupholder, one under the rear seats and on in the middle of the trunk) and that gave me some kind of a „hmmmm“-moment. Since I already pulled the eprom (some Arduino breadboard magic included) and checked it and measured the whole ECU this sounded like the last thing I could try.
And jepp! The front one was corroded by moisture combined with the fine Sahara sand that is everywhere inside the car (you will never get rid of this if you’re not 100% fully disassemble tha whole car). Cleaned it, plugged it in, opened Techstream started the teaching process and… IT WORKED.
