Hey All,

Haven't posted in a lot of years as my 100 has been a kid daily driver for the past few years and before that, work and young kids precluded me doing much overlanding.

Question: The 100K Maintenance it's due for and a few other upgrades to it is going to be maybe 5K on a truck that is probably only worth high teens. Sentimental value to me of course. Are there any "known gremlins" I should have checked out before I make this investment? I know of the water pump and timing belt (but mine was done 8 years ago at 69K miles?) but there may be others. I'm concerned with going through all of this and wishing I had traded it instead.

It only has had one "dead in the water" failure in the 19 years I've owned it: fuel pump went out.

I'm about to turn 50, and with kids older and have a virtual position now with a company I founded, I'm going to start overlanding again.

Thanks for the help, and if I should be redirected to somewhere this has been discussed, I'd appreciate it!

John

So you only have 100k miles? That's nothing.

I'd spend the time and money on some reasonable preventative maintenance items and keep going. Have you seen pricing on the new ones?

I am about 185K and currently in a pursuit of intermittent ABS light, all connections seem good and everything that could be replaced already has been done. That is about it.

I think you'd be hard pressed to trade it for a better overland vehicle. Many of us are in the 300k+ club and are not afraid to take the truck virtually anywhere. It will, as with anything (even a new vehicle), require proper maintenance. If you are a DIY guy this is a great truck for that. If you pay the dealer for all your maintenance then maybe not.

Keep this give it the love it needs then throw on your extras and go out overlanding. 5k is cheaper then a new truck upgrade your planning to get dirty anyway.

Bought mine with 270k miles early this year for 8,5k. Incl. bumpers/ roof rack I already spent at least 1.5x of that to make it nice. Fluids flush, bearings, rotors and pads, some bushings, ...

GO FOR IT! :-)

Show pics of your engine bay, underfloor, knuckles and similar and you'll get enough comments on what people see. Where does it leak, what should you do, ...

Didn't look at pricing, I'm not real impressed with the esthetics as I saw one today for the first time. Also had a bad experience with a "all new" Land Rover that forced me into the 100, which has been a really good rig for many years.

Hey, great idea, I'll do that in the morning. No leaks. I've got a custom aluminum skidplate on it (for sliding in deep snow, not so much for rocks) so I may not get much from underneath. Thanks!

Did you say, "Land Rover"?!? :flush:

Were you referring to how it's the same price as I spent on my 100, 19 years ago?

Not really. Just that $5k or so in maintenance on a 100 series is obviously going to be way less than the $60k or so (minus your trade value) that a new LC / GX550 will run you - assuming that's what you'd upgrade to.

That said, if you have a clean 1 owner 06 with only 100k miles on it that could likely fetch you a bit more than high teens.
