I was at the overland expo this weekend, and meet with the reps for: Kaiser Locker, KAISER LOCKER :: WEBSITE COMING SOON! ::
In Portuguese: KAISER - Bloqueio de Diferencial
Anyhow I have been wanting to add a locker to the rear of my 97 FZJ80, and they seem to have a really neat product, did the research, and came up with nothing.. At least nothing in English! They are out of Brazil, and there is tons of stuff in Portuguese, Even plenty of Forums "IH*MUD Brazilian equivalents" that have tons of treads on them! They seem to be popular down in the Amazonas! :eek: :hmm:
DOES ANYONE ON MUD SPEAK PORTUGUESSE???
Long story short, they are new to the US. Market, and I was fairly convinced that it was worth the try! I hate to be the first but someone has to do it! :grinpimp:
Well I have bought the rear locker, and will receive it this week will be doing the install over a coming weekend? Hopefully and posting a full write up! So stay tuned:popcorn:
Anyone in the Phoenix area willing to lend a hand? :confused: It would be my first Locker install so I could use the technical advice, and a hand! I will provide the snacks and :beer: :D

I don't know where to start...

1: I can't see how it works...
2: The clutch material I see on the dead right of the pic in post #2, does NOT indicate to me a "locker"...
3: I can't see how it works
4: I looks completely unlike anything I've ever seen...
5: I can't see how it works
And 6: Why does it need 30 bolts to hold the case together?

And the cost???

Their "catalog" is a 1 meg PDF file that is one page long...and provides no information.

From their site:

DESCRIPTION

Locking Differential Kaiser is the first 100% automatic lock, which retains all the comforts of a conventional differential on the asphalt, and all the benefits of a 100% blockage in the off-road.

PERFORMANCE

With Kaiser Differential Lock both wheels get traction force equally; if one loses the grip on the road, the traction (applied) will be maintained by the opposite wheel, allowing it to traverse obstacles and make turns with greater control and maneuverability. ie, the Kaiser Differential Lock does not allow either of the two wheels of the axle, turn the crown unless the gap, but allows any of the wheels turn more if needed to make the compensation curves.

The release of the wheel in the curve, it is inherent in the operation of the lock, ensuring a smoother and ability in corners, and a large reduction in noise and crackling.

SPECIFICATIONS

- 100% traction on both wheels;
- Uses original oil, recommended by the manufacturer of the vehicle;
- Applicability to the front and rear axle (including all-wheel drive vehicles);
- Free periodic maintenance;
- 1 year warranty with unlimited mileage and vehicle preparation;

HOW IT WORKS

Locking Differential Kaiser is the first block 100% automatic, which allows the vehicle to store all the comforts of a conventional differential on the asphalt, and all the benefits of a 100% blockage in the off-road.

And the only Toyota they have listed:

Code:
TOYOTA
MOD VEHICLE DESCRIPTION APPLICATION GROOVES COD. NEKARTH
Bandeirantes	 Toyota		 Both		 30		 DIKB-03-Z = 30

Googling Toyota Bandeirantes only turns up 40 series.

...it should be smooth

That was the most important selling point for me.. I have never felt comfortable with the other automatic lockers on the market because although tried and tested, that strain on the drive-train just IMHO is not good at all especially if you want to keep your kidneys in their place :lol:
The only other locker I was seriously considering was ARB air lockers :hmm: But given the complexity of running air lines, electrical, pumps, etc.. if this locker does a good job, I dont see why complicate things.:cheers::meh:

About the cost.
Well I don't know what their final pricing will be once launched officially in the States.
But they where running a Introductory special at the Overland Show for $700..
What made me jump against my rational instincts and be the 1st to try was that doing research I came across a Brazilian site where they mentioned that the price in Brazil is BR2,400, at today's exchange rate that is 2,400.00 BRL = 1,367.91 USD

Thats getting into selectable locker range for an auto locker :confused:

Lincoln? Isn't that when you weld the spider gears (ex with a Lincoln welder).

Yep that's what it is. I think ebag is mistaken.

Yep, It's pricey! :doh:
But I do like the simplicity of the system! :rolleyes:
We will see after install and some time on the trails how it does and the drawbacks or advantages and make a better informed comparison of quality, reliability, effectiveness, and then see if the price merits the system ;)
Just hope it works as advertised because if not I am SOL.. :doh: :whoops:

yeah, I don't think things are cheaper in South America...

I talked to a guy that flew up here and drove as many Toyota trucks and parts as he could back... He was reluctant to tell me, but what I got out of him they sold for a lot more down there... Landcruiser's, in ANY condition were crazy expensive.

You have to think, when they buy stuff down there, they marry it...

They don't live in the land of milk and honey like we do and the pickings aren't as easy...

Heck, $1,300 is in ARB territory...

And you don't have to watch your transitions with that diff...

Look at the vid Ebag posted, pause it at 1:38 and look at the things that hold the needle bearings in... Imagine slamming those things together in fwd to reverse transitions...

what diffs are you guys looking at? B/c it doesn't look anything like ANY diff...

:confused:

Full case Detroit... (for a 14 bolt axle, but the same in a case)

It looks to me like it only drives off the needle bearings...

There are the two inner pieces that hold the needle bearing in place, but in the vid there are slots for them in the case too...

So to me, it looks like there will be a ton of slop, and pressure on the case as well as the stops on the two inner pieces that hold the needle bearings...

But I'm sure I'm missing something...

And a word of caution... Are there lots or roads and highways in South/ Central America? Like, as in @ 90%? Like North America?

it should have the same effect as doing this...

Suzuki Samurai Project Fredurai - 4-Wheel and Off-Road

"Some folks weld the side gears directly to the spider gears when welding their spools, but I chose to try just welding between the gear teeth in the side gear so that there was still some slop in the differential. This will allow a little movement, and in theory, would help when cornering. It may also allow the spider gears to try and step up over the welds and blow the differential apart, or let the diff wind up and put extreme shock load on the shafts. Either way, I will let you know when it happens."
