Hey guys,
Just picked up the BJ70 rag-top in Vancouver :D , made it home about 1/2 hour ago (BC Ferries...sigh...).
I am loving this thing, it's a total brute :bounce: , squirrely short wheel base, rough ride, noisy diesel engine, rag-top in the wind etc...what an awesome ride!

Question #1: It does make a noise that doesn't sound right, when I let off of the gas and the engine brakes the truck, I get a loud rattle (almost a growl) from the area around the tranny tunnel/firewall. Is it possibly a worn bushing at the tranny mount or a loose exhaust heat shield? It definitely sounds like something making contact with the floor or firewall. As soon as I give it a bit of gas, it goes away completely.

Question #2: I don't yet have a service manual, but I was told the engine idle is slightly too high, how do I adjust the throttle linkage to fix this?

Question #3: Where can I find information on the fluid types and capacities so I change them all out now that I own it? What about glow plugs?

Question #4: My 4x4 transfer case instructions are in Japanese, how do you work the push-button and the 2H-N-4L lever and the hubs?

Question #5: How do you operate the choke knob?

Thanks for your help!

#1) Check pinion for looseness, heatshield (if you have one), u-joints, and driveshaft.

#2) There is a screw with a locknut on the throttle body facing away from the left side. Crack the nut, loosen the screw, tighten the nut. Idle (when warm) is about 700 rpm

#3) Semi-synthetic is really the way to go. Make sure you get a motor oil which is MADE FOR DIESELS!!! You can use gas engine oil in a pinch (EG: at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere) but diesel oil is made to suspend the soot from the engine in the oil, gasser oil is not. You can use a decent 15W-40 all year round, especially in Vancouver. If your worried about cold weather/warm weather oil, use 0W30 in winter and 10 or 20W50 in summer. For gear oil, use 80W90, also semi-synth if you can afford it, but not if you are going to do lot of water crossings I your truck. If that’s the case, use dino oil in the tranny/transfer.

If the glow light comes on, and it starts good, your plugs are fine. Cross that bridge when you come to it.

#4) lock the hubs 1st. Below 40 km (I believe) you may push the button on or off to engage 2HI / 4HI. Virtually a complete stop to shift it into 4LO

#5) twist clockwise for higher idle, counter cw for lower. This is helpful on days where you might be idling for long periods of time in order to boost your oil pressure or when it’s cold.

You can also engage low range and it will shift into 4x4 without touching the button.

Craig,
very good advice, one small correction, you can engage the front via the push button at ANY speed as long as the hubs are ocked and you are driving in a straight line.
always be stopped to go into 4L there is no sync between 4H and 4L.

cheers
BTW i sell the factory shop manuals for both engine and chassis.
