Hey Guys,

I just purchased a 2005 100 series, it has 113k, looks really clean! The dealership is offering me a 5yr 100k mile warranty on Powertrain (engine, tranny), belts, hoses, AC/Heater for $2000.... What are your (the experts) thoughts? It includes all parts and labor, there is a $100 deductible each time.

Those usually only cover failure. You will probably be better served using the money to baseline your rig and save the rest for normal maintenance.

No, you bought a land cruiser, not a land rover.

All kidding aside, no. $2000 will get you pretty far if anything breaks.

This. There is no need to waste 2K on that, put it towards some mods/PM

Holy s**t, beautiful rig, congrats. NO WARRANTY.

Nice truck! It says a lot about the quality of Land Cruisers that they are willing to warranty it through 2021 and 213,000 miles for any price! But, no, not worth it. Assuming it's got a good history, you'll be fine using that $2000 otherwise.

I just saw that 2005 on ksl.com . Good buy. No Warranty! made that mistake once before!

I'd normally say don't waste your money. But that is a great price for 5yrs, provided it's a good warranty.

So consider these two point:
First; Looks built for wheeling, which implies it been off road wheeling. These 100 are tanks, but even tanks get beat up.
Second; The 2004 & early 05 have a transmission issue. I'd check to see if factory had limit on millage or years they'd pay to correct this. They usually do if not safety or pollution issue. I believe the fix was a new transmission and torque converter.

FIFTH GEAR SHUDDER Service Bulletin : 00105 - JAN 28, 2005 NHTSA Item #: 10015192

Component: POWER TRAIN

Models affected:
2004-’05 LX 470 vehicles produced before the Production Change Effective VIN: JTJHT00W#53553516 (11/2004 mfg date). LC VIN JTEHT05J#52073579 (11/2004 mfg date)

Some 2004 and 2005 model year LX 470 vehicles may exhibit a shudder (or vibration) sensation, usually accompanied by a cyclic droning noise, when lightly accelerating (less than 15% throttle) after the transmission shifts into 5th gear (usually between 35 and 45 mph). This condition may be caused by water entering the transmission breather, contaminating the transmission fluid. The transmission breather has been changed to prevent water intrusion."

If it was a toyota or lexus financial services warranty, I'd say do it. Sadly, there aren't many companies that offer good coverage outside of the manufacturer extended service plans.

The downside of aftermarket extended service plans is they usually cover a lot less than the manufacturer warranty (probably won't fix leaks and seeps), it's at their discretion to fix something, and usually offer a repair rate much less than you'll find at a dealership (leaving the customer to pay the rest). If it doesn't cover at least seeps / leaks from all drivetrain and suspension, coil packs, radiator leaks, AC leaks and failure, and all major brake components.... I wouldn't buy that plan personally.

Toyota / Lexus will typically limit TSB repairs to the warranty coverage it falls under (standard warranty, power train, etc).

There is an unwritten rule, either buy all extended warranties on everything or buy none. I chose to buy none. In the long run you will save a pile.
