"Turkey tail" detail on the roof peak sounds cool
It will look something like this.

The last week or so has involved designing the cupolas. Morton barns usually have the twin cupolas like in this photo. I wanted something different and the existing house has a single, large cupola. So the barn will also have a single, large cupola that is approximately 8’ by 8.’

So I am doing a fancy copper weathervane. I went down a dark hole of weathervane art and finally nailed that down.

The pole barn has been finalized and should go up the week of June 6th. That structure will be 36’ x 60’ and will generally match the larger barn.

I am not really sure if I will do a cupola on this barn. I think I’m going to wait and see how it looks against the bigger barn and make a decision at that time. Probably makes the most sense to be doing those at the same time anyway.

I’m anxious for this one to get up because I need to get fuel tanks installed and tractors and other equipment moved over sooner rather than later.

Lots of dirt being moved. I believe around 30 loads have been delivered with another 20 or so to go.

The parking barn is going to be delivered on May 30 and it should be up very quick.

The main barn had its first change order finalized today. The barn is pretty final at this point with the exception of finalizing the electrical plan and lighting. I think I generally got everything I wanted in the final version. I guess I could have built a bigger barn but that was not really something I desired. The final climatized space will be 3,432 square feet.

I will be well beyond what I originally envisioned spending.

Airplane hanger doors
I built my own and it seals up good, the exposed top hinge is ugly but not that bad.

Always is, especially now.

Can’t find a better pic right now but once this gets the white trim cross boards on it it’ll be barn-ish looking.

The barn site is generally prepped for now. It will be in fine shape for the pole barn to go up later this month.

I have finalized the floor plan of the main barn and Morton is going to start the permitting process.

The barns will be on their own power source with backup generator. I have a meeting with the power company this week to discuss running power up to the barn site.

I’ve got a new tractor getting delivered this week. Pretty excited about that.

My goal is to just make progress each week.

I am pretty happy with the general layout and elevation.

The building orientation works well on the landscape and I’ll be able to move equipment and trucks around easily. This view is from an existing road so I will be able to pull tractors right from that road and into the parking barn and refuel if necessary.

This is quickly becoming my favorite thread because nobody reads it. The title does not really draw you to click on it.

I put a lot of thought into my tractor situation. I had a Kubota MX5200 with a few implements but it was nowhere near big enough for the new farm. I really needed two tractors anyway. A couple of weeks ago I had a business partner at the house and he kept telling me how much he needed my tractor for this lake house be bought. Coincidentally, he had a Kubota 7060 cab model with AC and low miles he had bought and did not need (also too big for the lake property). So we struck up a trade.

We have a mutual friend who is into heavy machinery and I asked him if he could do the tractor swap. He could not but he gave me a name.

The deal went down last Thursday. In retrospect, I should have called it off but it’s over now. Something just seemed off about the driver but not so bad that I did not feel like he could not accomplish the task. The first red flag was that he let me load the trailer. I knew how it needed to be done but usually those guys are so particular about their loading that they do everything. Okay, maybe he was lazy.

He took about 6 hours to make a 3 hour trip. Okay maybe he needed to get lunch, gas, and an hour at Cafe Risqué near Gainesville. It’s just a tractor.

He made the delivery with absolute ease despite the delays. He then called to tell me my new tractor was broken because he had it in forward but it would not go forward. s***. His tractor delivery experience did not go past lawn tractors and he had never driven a tractor with a clutch (or a car for that). Honestly, I should have called it off then. But I had someone nearby that could help him so I dispatched them and they got it loaded.

My local guy sent me a text and said they were loaded up and headed to my farm. I texted the driver and told him let’s do the drop off the next morning because I didn’t want to deal with unloading so late at the farm. I put down my phone and relaxed. Nope.

What the hell. I do not really know how he ended up in this position. The guy I did the trade with sent me these photos just saying “it is what it is.” It seems the driver decided at the last minute he wanted to re-load the trailer.

I told the transport ppl to just drop the tractor at the Kubota dealer in town. It took him a bit but it finally made it Friday afternoon.

It really did not mess up much. I think there is a broken hydraulic line. The weight of the mower probably saved the tractor from flipping completely over. Will get it all fixed up and serviced and on to the farm. This is my smaller tractor that will be used primarily for mowing and some light earth moving. The cab and AC will make that pleasant.

Yea I can go into the arcade a bit. My most recent score is a PC-10 that I had restored. These are pretty hard to find in any shape. This one was in pretty nice original condition before it got polished up. This arcade was a Nintendo model that allowed you to select a game from 10 choices.

This game is cool because there were also these cool “toppers” that were offered to let ppl know the “big 3” games on the machine. Not all the machines have the same games.

Not a whole lot to update. Morton is supposed to deliver the parking barn materials next Wednesday. If I’m lucky it won’t rain and they will actually able to make it to the building site. Fingers crossed.

The windows I want for the main barn take about 2 1/2 times as long to get as the standard Pella windows. I’m going to just stand my ground and wait on the windows that I want. No sense in compromising at this point.

I ventured over to the farm this morning to meet the guy delivering materials. Much to my surprise the county got out before I did and worked on the dirt road.

Morton actually showed up a little early as well. That’s always a good sign.

Hoping to see construction start on Monday and it seems to be about 5-7 work days on this barn.

I own a Kubota and built a Morton 3 years ago, both are great . Anyway, the Morton quality has proven its worth and I have been very happy with it. I used spray foam for insulation and it works very well. What will you use for insulation down there? Curious as well, what you are using for climate control? Finally, and as you know, I spent WAY more than anticipated.
I will be watching.

I do not believe I will go with the spray foam. I have that in my current barn and do not have any complaints. I’ve checked out a few other Morton barns in the area and they all went with the Morton insulation package that utilizes fiberglass insulation. They were all very pleased and did not feel like there would be much benefit with the spray insulation over the planned setup.

Climate control is TBD. I’m rolling a 20 SEER variable speed unit in my current shop. It seems to work pretty well.
