Thought I'd introduce myself as I may become a regular to the board. The name is Matt and I presently have a 96 LC with 51K miles. I'm thinking of selling the hanger queen and moving into the 100 series of cruisers.

After driving a 99, it's evident that quietness and smoothness of ride is miles ahead of the 80 series. The V8 is smoother and more powerful than the stock 4.5 could ever dream to be. Although my taste prefers the body style of the 80, the 100 beats it in every other way. For me hardcore wheeling is not an issue as I reside in Florida where deep mud, sand and water are the norms. Not the preferred habitat for most cruisers.

I understand that traction control and rear diff lock were available in certain years. Do you guys view this as a desirable option, if so, which years. Can the presence of these options be determined by serial #.

Second and most important can anyone provide me with a detailed pre buy inspection list. Weak points, cabin leaks, anything mechanical. Any areas prone to rust?

What would be a fair price for a 99-00 with 30- 40K

Thanks in advance for your contributions.

Matt

Just curious, do you have lockers on your 96 LC with 51K miles?

Do a search and I know there is a thread that one guy moved from the 80 to 100.

Definitely read the Sticky FAQ at the front of this forum

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=30754

and see Sleeoffroad for the 100 series newbie guide

which goes over options for the different model years and pre-purchase inspection checklist. From what guys are saying, the traction control is the way to go, although I've never felt unsafe in mine on the highway, even during a deer swerving under heavy braking incident in the mountains one time.

You're likely to get bombarded with offers for your 80, so be prepared, BTW.

Matt.
Im in a family that owns an 80 and a 100. My car is an 80. I love it to death and my moms is the 100. no doubt, the 100 is a nice car and i love driving it but i recently had the 80 in the shop for new rotors and was in the 100 for awhile. i loved getting back into the 80 after 2 days. In my opinion, cruisers are supposed to be big heavy capable vehicle and i like how i can feel the weight of the 80. I think most people would also agre that a stock 80 w/ lockers is more capable than a stock 100.

Now, your 80 has 51k miles....to me and most others, that is awesome. If that has lockers i would definately rather have it than a 100. I have 240k miles on mine and it runs like a top. As for power...your mileage is low enough that your could supercharge that thing and make it a hell of alot faster than a 100.
All in all, if i were in your shoes and your 80 had lockers, i would stick with it and S/C it. Either way, both amazing vehicles and pretty capable out-of-the-box.

Matt, the lowest mileage 00's I could find in Jan. 05 were around 50,000 mi. and they were asking about $28,000 at the time.

The best advice I've heard yet is to buy the newest/low mileage vehicle you can afford.

traitor  :flipoff2: :D

Let's try and remember that he is NOT asking for an 80/100 comparison so stop the BS already on what he should really do.

Matt:

Welcome. It is very very doubtful that you will find a 99-00 with 30-40k miles. I am sure they exist but it would take a while unless you are VERY lucky. You will see, in the average, more like 50-75k miles in that year range. And quite honestly, there is little difference in performance and, most importantly, private party value after the cruiser reaches 50K miles and over 4 years old.

All in all, the engine, driveline and electrics in the 100 are outstanding. A credible and clear service record would be the most important in my book due to the fact that, at that mileage level, all service is really proactive. Your O2 sensors start to go in the 90-110k mark. I have 0 issues from my front end and it has never been repacked or rebuilt. CD player/radio is sh-t. The tape feature will be broke and the CD player might follow suit.

The major maint. really does not come into play until 90k. But I assume you are not looking at buying anything close so, no need to worry.
