Hi there. Anyone install this PS kit?
Power Steering Kit for Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 FJ45 - JTOutfitters

Also here:
Power Steering Kit for Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 FJ45:eBay Motors (item 270452032518 end time Dec-03-09 08:52:48 PST)

Hoping someone can give me thumbs up or down on quality, completeness, etc.

Also, what might a used minitruck PS gearbox cost? (one that doesnt require an immediate rebuild)? and are there good sources for this (other than a junque yard)

thx!
I assembled my kit from parts for less than that including a box. Got the box here on mud and am using a stock Toyota pump from a 60 I parted. I think I spent about $300 total.

$400 for a PS pump, hose and some brackets seems crazy. I'm with Hugh, check the Mud classified under "parts for sale" and "parting out." Lots of good writeups on this project, so you certainly don't need to pay JTO for instructions!

I did this kit on my '67Fj40. I had to locate a steering column that had the rag joint end since I didn't want to weld on the steering shaft. The hardest thing to get was the low pressure return line fitting for the mini truck box (17mm x 1.5) I went to psc motorsports and bought an adapter, since I didn't want to pay the $26 from toyota. It was an easy swap and it seems to turn my 35's ok, I've seen these boxes for around $75 on C.L.

X2 on checking out the Mud classifieds. Also, check out orangefj45, he is now making the Dorry brackets for this conversion. There is plenty of info on a number of threads covering this conversion. About the only thing I would buy from jto if I couldn't find new would be the high pressure hose. Or you could have a hydraulic shop make up a hose for you.

ok thanks everyone. Cost aside, I was looking for a quick up and go solution. A kit would be quicker than piecing it all together. I will check out the parts for sale and hope I dont buy incompatible bits!
regards

I used this kit and kind of regret it now. I was looking for a quick bolt on solution but I ended up being out of commission for about a month. It was pretty hard to find the P/S box, but eventually found one from a MUD member. If I were to do it again I would piece my kit together and save some cash.

PS steering kit

Hi,

I'd also rec doing your own sourcing. I recently got most all the stuff to do one and will put one in my '70 fj 40 pretty soon. I got the ps gear box from a fellow mudder for about $100.0 & sent it to west texas offroad in san angelo for a rebuild (~ $170.00 with shipping). It looks brand new now & took about a week. You can check the yards for one or you can probably find a whole junked minitruck on CL for a few hundred & pull what you want from it. It may be a bit more $$ but you'd also get the front axle & stuff to use or sell off. I bet you'd break even if you did it. You can also post in the minitruck forum to see if someone has a old one they'd sell.

IIRC, The rest of the stuff is pretty easy to source. The ps pump was used in lots of old toyota cars (or you can use a saginaw pump). I got the bracket from georg (Orangefj45). I pulled my crank pulley (a real PITA) to upgrade to a 2 belt unit from a 2F. You should also think about how you want to set up your steering column. You may need a bearing for the upper steering column to house it in the old housing & a rag joint/steering coupler to attach the bottom end to the gear box. There's also the problem of where to put the ps pump. I haven't gotten there yet but coolerman seems to have a nice solution on his website. Hope you get everything within your budget!

Here's the link to my mini truck PS conversion: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...d-power-steering-oem-pump-mini-truck-box.html

What year is your 40? What year (and if you're running a stock F or 2F engine or not) will help determine what parts you'll need as far as mounting brackets, steering shafts, and things like pump placement.

Mine was pretty much bolt in and go (didn't have to modify the steering shaft) - once I had all the parts, the actual install took about 1/2 a day.

I have a 78 FJ40. But it has (for some reason) a 1F engine (F). Has stock manifolds (or so I believe). sounds like what I need are:
1. sagniaw pump
2. minitruck gearbox
3. pump and gearbox brackets (dorry?)
4. High and low pressure lines
5. Pulley for the pump

i am hoping my F engine has the same mounting points as the 2F for the pump. I already have a dual pulley on the crank shaft so that should help

If you use the Sag pump, seems like guys here like the one from a certain model Volvo....do a search here and you should be able to find it.

When you source a minitruck gearbox, see if you can get it with the return line nipple - will same you some $$. Also check that the "port seats" are there, or your box will leak when you hook up the lines.

I think the dorry brackets are best - they're available through orangefj45 for a very reasonable price and they're stout.

I got my high pressure line from Napa - I think it was $35 or so (PN in my thread). The low preessure line can just be regular by-the-foot hose from the auto parts store with clamps on both ends.

With a '78 and the dorry gearbox pedestal, you won't need any mods to the steering shaft....that's good.

Keep us posted on your progress.....
