Well, good , bad or indifferent, i'm buying this 1965 FJ40 Corrugated top Cruiser from a friend. I think it has potential for a restoration.I'ts missing the transfer case and transmission . It does have the original f135 block, matching numbers to frame and cowl plate. along with the crank ,flywheel and bellhousing. It's missing the head, pistons rods etc....Also there is quite a bit of rust in the tub.
Question: What is a fair price for this ? i dont want to take advantage of a situation with my friend, but i also do not want to pay more than it's worth.
Could use some knowlegable opinions, and i know this is the place.

You say it has the original block. The number by the starter matches the VIN plate? Seems a little funny since the first model a oil filter was attached to the block in that location was 74. The oil in that engine is added thru the valve cover. Up until the 72 model (F155) the oil was added to the block thru a tube that was about in the location of that oil filter:hhmm:

I'll second around $750 to $1000...you still need a lot, and $1000 + is being good to your friend

I think you had pics of older rims. Do you know if they're riveted, or welded together? You'd want the riveted :)

Couple of things...I agree with Living In The Past, that does not look like the correct engine block...which numbers are you talking about?

The roll bar does not belong.

And, I could be wrong, but you appear to be missing the original heater, which would have mated up to the original diagonal grill on the right side of the cowl (this diagonal "grill" started in 65)...you have an Eaton heater, which would have been installed on an older cruiser, (like mine, without the outside air intake), you can see that patch that was put in on the fire wall...oh, and if you get rid of the Eaton...please let me know :D

$500 to $1000 if you are feeling super generous. Engine rebuild could cost $4k with parts and all of that and then you need to get a tranny, transfer case, etc. I would think it would be rolling nicely for $10,000.

Here are a couple of pics i took of the engine block. Should the stamping on the block be the same number as on the frame and firewall?

looks like you got a replacement block some time around 1974...they came unstamped....somebody stamped it themselves it looks like

looks like they mayhave even stamped it the same as your frame #...just quessing...whats your frame #?

a typical engine # for the F's start with an F ...not an FJ...and they would not be the same as your frame #....so it looks like you have a stamped 74 f engine block to me...which is OK...because its desputably the best of the f engines :)

The original block number came stamped VIN. This is the main reason I not going to do a original restore on my FJ45. The original engine is gone an early 2F is in it's place. Because the head is missing and they is no Toyota stamped serial number they is a chance is could be a 2F. Is the production date case into the other side towards the front?

off by a year

its actually a 75....so its a 2f...the location of the oil pressure sender...and lack of an oil cooler 76+ threw me off....but...John (living in the past) is correct...its a 2f

the # 50417 is year/month/day....so 1975/april/17th

it makes it alot easyer to get parts now :)

Hey, Thanks Johnny! The info i get from all you guy's on this site is invaluable. I even bought a Silver star to help keep this site going!
So....since it has been determined that i have a 1975 2F engine, would a 1971 be an appropiate donor motor for heads, manifolds rods, etc? I found a complete 71 for 500.00 Attached are photos of the one for sale.

I wouldn't bother for $500 :meh:

Fun to see I was correct about both the 2F block, and the '71 engine. If indeed you want to do a true restoration, bring that 2F block that you have to the scr*p yard for some $$, start working on the cruiser, and keep your eyes open for an F135...I wouldn't waste my time and money on either engine you showed :meh:

You are in CA...you'll find the correct engine/tranny/t-case before the rig is ready, so no worries.
