Any one remember these?
Many, Many years ago, say around '78, I ran a set of Jackman wheels on a cj7 (before I was led to redemption by a friend with a fj40), and seems like another buddy had a set on his 40 but I'm kinda blurry about it after so many years. They were soooo much stronger than any thing else on the market. I remember they had a different hole cut-out pattern much more of a spoke design and the spokes were welded to the hub and outer rim. They were not stamped wheels and were a hell-of a lot thicker material-wise and quite a bit heavier than other wheels at that time.
Since I'm not having much luck finding an affordable set of stockers for my nephews resto project ,:bang: we are looking for other alternatives. If anyone out there have ever ran these, please post up. I doubt they are still in business. My searching shows nada! Thanks in advance....

Jackman rims

I scored four good rims last summer in Cucamonga but also need 3 more. One for the spare and two for the trailer. Haven't found anything anywhere or anybody on-line that knows much about them. I have seen pixs of fjs for sale that I think are equiped with them after study of close-up down load photos.

yea, I forgot all about those. I had a set on my first 40 in ~'82. Bought from friend's dad who bought them new for his new 79 Chevy 4WD truck. As I recall they were very thick steel and HD. Water under the bridge as they say and any white spoke avail now will be undescernable to 99.999% of the people. Now if you were looking for a period-correct aluminum 'turbo' rim, that's a different story and considerably different in appearance that everyone would notice.

Edit: images.google search provided this that is just as I remember them. albeit on an F250

Can you post up a couple of photos of those rims, maybe front and back side?
Trade?

i had a set of those on my 40 with 33s they broke my wheel studs on my front axle because they are so thick. just a warning and yes the lugs were torqued properly

You need to elaborate on that statement.
Thanks dgangle

I had a set of Jackmans/Armstrong Tru Tracs on my 48 CJ-2 and then switched them to my new 76 CJ-5. They were an excelent set of white spokes and very durable. I tried looking up Jackman Wheels some time ago, but came up with nothing. From what I recall, they manufactured wheels for Baja Bugs, and then branched out into 4 wheel drive vehicles. I wish I had kept my Jackman Wheels. I got rid of my Jackmans and put on a set of American Racing Aluminum spokes, those were sharp looking rims also. Hows that for a cruise down memory lane?

sent you a pm - might have a set for you if interested

One of the reasons, if not the biggest one, why those type of wheels are not around any more is that they are not DOT street legal.

If you look closely at the pics, or better yet, remember [yes, I too fall into that catagory] that massively thick center section was plate steel. No raised ring to help keep the lugnuts tight. Requires stud snapping torque to keep the lugnuts on.

I still have my set of Jackman Baja rims with the uber-offset sitting in storage. They were always my favorites for Pismo.

Best

I think that is why my son mentioned breaking a stud or two, but the rims are definately very beefy!

Yes -- they are no longer made....and havent been for some time. They were made here in San Diego, by the father of a girl I went to High school with. I guess in the end there was not much market left...everyone had a set on there Heep, buggy etc

.

what do you mean by no raised ring Mark . what kind of wheels are these on my trailer i picked up this summer , wheels look slightly different (see pic) from memory pretty sure mine look like plate steel ,gonna have to go and take a look

.

Modern steel wheels have a raised section at the lugnut, so that the metal of the wheel directly behind the lugnut does not touch the hub/drum. This acts like a lockwasher, putting extra tension on the lugnut that a flat stamped piece of metal cannot provide.

Back in 72, my brother told me about some cool white spoked rims the guys in San Diego were starting to run. I had him send me a pic, the rest is history. Ran them on my new 72 ford courior. They were made in San Diego, as I had to pick them up there.

Question for you Mark,
Would adding a lock washer with the lug nut solve this?
Or
Could a man counter bore the back side, say .050 deep to create the same effect?

And a great big thanks for all the info and posts friends.......
