I was the last one to post in this thread, so it's only right that I be the one to revive it.
This is the beginning of a series of posts to come over the next few months as Jrob's 40 goes back under the knife. This will be an attempt to appease the great and powerful Grogan who contends that we do a s***ty job of documenting secret squirrel s***. The goal is to link the front and rear using FZJ-80 axles...well sort of.
The plan is as follows:
4 link rear
3 link front
Shooting for 110" WB and a frame height of 24"
80 series rear axle
Diamond housing in the front (Toyota 9.5" center section), cut to 80 series front width...using 80 knuckle balls and Hellfire knuckles
PSC full hydro setup
39" BFG Krawlers
14" coilovers on each corner - thinking 5" up travel and 9" of droop??
Here's the starting point as of Friday when we were weighing it:
Total weight from the racing scales (driver in the truck and weight added to account for fuel, tools, parts, etc):
Rear unsprung weight:
And front unsprung weight:
After some late night discussions with the thundertalkers at Ramble, we decided to start on the front. Ripped the front axle out:
And drug it out back...with the tractor, of course:
Cut off all the brackets, mounts, etc and cleaned up the frame:
Began cutting some plate for frame reinforcement:
Yesterday was spent crawling around underneath to see where various link brackets could fit. After a lot of measuring, marking, remeasuring, and after several iterations of the spreadsheets, we came up with these first drafts (hopefully they are legible):
And:
An immediate concern is the exhaust on the driver side (the upper link mount will need to be right about where the pipes merge). The current plan is to cut it out, build the suspension, and then let the exhaust guy get real creative and work some magic:
That is all for now...more updates will follow.
