not going to move it that far!..............................................yet.

thats just the kicker. I believe you may have to, to get a decent length on your drive shaft.
plus why would you want to stretch it twice? at the very least do the rear comp cut fender /body work once, so all you have to do is play with the suspension.

plus if you did the rear body work and decide on a suspension then you would only have to buy/modify drive shaft once.

just my 2 cents for what its worth

Jrob I like the looks of this one for you:

Why a toybox? I can't imagine why you would do that over an Orion.

As for a stretch, I would keep it in the fender well. You can flip the rear spring pack and it moves the rear axle back to the center of the fender well.

If you go SOA or super hardcore one day, then push the front out to get the wheelbase you want.

Toybox? Thoughts there?

Guys, unless he is going a spring over there is no way to get the tires back there without relocating all the hangers. Then, having it sprung under with 4" springs will not be good.

You guys can crack all you want about me not working on my s***, but I have been wasting money on crap mods like this for about 12 years. I am telling you, this is not the route to go.

Do the fender cutouts and rear flares while the fenders are screwed. Consider flipping the springs. All you need to do is cut/relocate the hangers on the axle to correct the pinion angle and you have a bit of a stretch and it still looks like a Cruiser.

I believe he is planning on something like this.

My main point is to get the body out of the way and do it one time.

Saves down time.

Especially since its damaged already.

My philosophy when it comes to the body is to not to fix it but remove it, then tube it.

especially when its in the way or going to be in the way.

D we all playing catch up to your rig man!

It's "no brainer" as in easier to fit... right? "bolt-in" application. what does it take to fit an orion? cause i want a box as well... so i need this question answered...

An Orion is a bolt-in direct replacement. No driveshaft mods, not shifter mods, just lower gears.

A toybox in a FJ-40 makes the rear driveline crazy short and the front shaft even longer.

I see no reason at all to not go with an Orion. If built right it is trouble free and 4:1 with the 4:1 first gear is a great combo on the road and trail.

hmm, the onliest reason then would be to go even lower?

Not for split case from my understanding. If so then why are they not used in 60's?

Hagan, yes. Lower gearing and SELECTIVE gearing which is also nice. They are great units, but the Orion is the easiest, best bet for a 40.

Bomar, Orions just work in FJ-40 cases. If you wanted to run one in a wagon you would need to put source a case from a non-split case truck to bolt up behind your 2F.

Nolen, me and daryl have been talking about what I could do. I have a 19 spline output shaft on my tranny with a splitcase.
1. you cannot put an orion in the splitcase.
2. to go with an orion I would haf to buy a 1 piece transfer case and the orion.
3. if I did the above, I believe we would have to change the output shaft of the transmission to either a 10 or 16 spline to install the 1 piece transfer case.
4. Also the driveshafts would still need to be modified, and I would hafta figure out something else on the parking brake, currently my parking brake is on the splitcase.

After looking at all this and adding everything up it is alot cheaper and easier to do the toybox. toybox is direct boltin to my 19 spline output shaft.

believe me if it was easy to put the orion in, I would. An orion would put me around 98 to 1 and that is plenty low,.. me and especially Daryl put alot of time into this trying to figure out what to do.

I have a non-split case... can you milk me?
So then.... why am I "looking" for a split case to set up a toybox?

I'm pulling the gas tank anyway... I'd love to keep my original tranny/case...

I don't believe it is that simple. in the later year transfer cases there is a 19 spline input. I don't believe there is such thing as a one piece 19 spline transfercase.

A good 4 speed tranny with the 10 or 16 spline output will cost you a whopping $100 from a parts truck.

I don't know. I still don't see it being a good thing if you are going to stay spring-under.

Ebrake? Line Lock.

Not much sense arguing with the bossman, he won't lead you astray, but I think the Orion is the way to go. 4 speeds are a dime-a-dozen.

4 speeds are a dime-a-dozen.

this is true... with the splitcase attached... I've got people offering me some for $250... but I'm holding out until someone is "throwing it away"... I've seen them for as little as $60... with split case...

I agree the Orion is THE way to gon in 99% of rigs like Jrob's but he really wants to use his current transmission and transfer case. The Orion is not adaptable to his 19 spline stuff, he didn't want to change out the mainshaft for a 10 or 16 spline unit, and he wants to keep the stronger splitcase. Toybox was the best fit given this.

As to the wheelbase stretch/wheelwell cut, my suggestion was to flip the rear springs for 3" additional wheelbase and move the spring hangers if desired to gain back the other lost 3-3.5" the toybox needs. I would flip the springs first and see if I could make a dc shaft out of a Toyota mini-truck work. Any more than that and it's time to throw out the whole current suspension, spring it over and cut away. I would NOT do that to Jrob's truck.

That's my 1/50th of a buck for ya for what it's worth.
