It's a silly question, but I honestly don't know the answer...

On every stick vehicle I've driven, you have to depress the clutch to start the engine, even when the tranny's in neutral. Is this due to an electrical switch a-la the neutral safety switch that auto trannies have, or is it simply due to the pressure of the clutch being engaged when the pedal isn't depressed?

Yes, same thing, it keeps bonehead like me from cranking it over and running into something...LOL

All the Cruisers I have had dont seem to have one, or they are all out of service which I prefer. I like the ability to start it in gear if I stall the engine on the trail somewhere, way better then clutching and holding the break and trying to start it when you are rolling backward on a steep incline.

I always loved the switch in Toyota mini's that allowed you to defeat that switch in an emergency.

Absolutely not. Not in a 60 anyway. You can start the vehicle in gear whenever you want. Comes in handy on the trail. I don't remember any stick shift vehicle where you couldn't start it without the clutch being depressed. Of course I've never owned a newer car...

I wasnt sure if my 60 didnt have one or it was just out of service. Toyota Pickups of the same vintage have em, hence the clutch start cancel switch.

I dont like the system in new automatics that make you put your foot on the brake before you can shift into gear or go into reverse, just irritates me.

It became law in the US after the whole "unintended acceleration" fiasco with Audi. (late 80's maybe?") Some manufacturers had it sooner then that. Some, like Toyota with the minitrucks, offered the cancel switch.

Chances are the FJ660's all came in before the law though.

87 fj60 doesn't have it, but a 87 4runner does..........go figure?

on my 87 4runner there was a switch on the dash, press it and it bypasses this stupid feature.

every time I get back from Baja, I take the tootsie roll into the carwash to save myself the hassle, they always leave it in gear, and I ALWAYS forget and lunge forward HAHAHAHA doh! I feel your pain.

OK -
Newer (certainly after '91) sticks require the clutch to be depressed to start the engine.
Audi developed the brake/park/neutral start device & made the design public. But as it turned out they didn't have the problem. Ford did.

I think Jeep had an elegant solution to the problem in my '99 XJ (sold, replaced by my FJ60!). Instead of a switch on the dash, there's a jumper wire zip-tied to the clutch pedal way up under the dash. There are instructions in the owner's manual on how to plug the jumper wire into the harness to defeat the clutch-start switch, along with a big warning about how you'll probably kill yourself, but also talking about how useful it can be off-road...

Naturally, I did that within months of buying it. I gotta say, it was funny as hell one day to watch a valet start it and nearly ram another car. That was the best reason ever to defeat that safety feature! :D

Speaking of which, my dad had a 2F swapped into his 71 FJ40 with SM465 and Detroit rear locker. The guy that was working on it decided to test it by just bumping the ignition switch while leaning through the window. He didnt realize it was in 1st, and the damn thing started rather then just giving half a crank. I guess he was hanging half out of the truck as it headed for the back of his garage. He was trying to hold the brake with his hand but the truck was still trying to go forward and the tires were chirping on the concrete. He got it shut down before it hit the back of the garage... he was pretty scared after that...LOL

Clutch switch

I installed a clutch switch after my girfriend drove my cruiser into a ditch when she turned the key to be able to open the window. She turned to far and started..... I was in the back looking for something in our luggage and jumped out but she drove in with the cruiser (See pic below)

Similar thing happened to my friend in a campsite, someone supposed to turn on the radio, but started the car. He was lucky and managed to stop the cruiser before it ran over few tents....

I just have to touch the clutch pedal to turn the switch, dont have to fully press it. My diesel engine starts as soon as turn the key, I belive this is a great security
