A litte Progress

Well it's offically cold out there. All I have are two little radiator type heaters and the barn is really a barn, no insulation plywood doors etc. But, a day off is a day off so work must go on. Got little things done today. Installed the freshly painted shifters, installed the new inner and outer boots for both. Laid some new heater hose and fuel line. Almost got all the lines installed and system almost closed off. This week picked up my new radiator (Keystone Automotive) and ready to intall it on Sunday, I hope. I think Trollhole has my missing carb/throttle linkage. I hope he agrees to sell it and I can move on. Also today I happen to look in an old box of parts that came inside the 40. I found my drivers side deforst duct. Go figure, had it the whole time. So I made sure and went through all my parts to make a mental note of what I got and don't have. Hopefully on Sunday I'll post some pictures of the progress.

Not sure if you know it or not, but ONSC members enjoy about a 27% discount off the normal price at Fred Anderson Toyota off Glenwood. Not sure what you're getting out of Georgia, but it may be comparable if you're a member...

Agreed. No shipping fees if you pick up from FA. I've taken advantage of this discount for parts like my NEW H55 to small parts. Well worth the price of admission to the club IMHO...

Membership

Thanks guys. I want to join the club as an "official" member. I don't have pay pal so please let me knowhow to proceed. BRain I can mail you a check or drop one off since I am close. I have been lurking long enough and have wanted to join just haven't done it, so advise and I'll proceed. Thanks.

As for Fred Anderson. I have purchased several parts so far from Thomas (parts manager, I think) he said ONSC get 20% off which is great. Sam at Lowe Toyota in GA gives mud guys 25% off, free shipping (for most everything) and there is no sales tax. That has helped in making large purchases such as wheels a couple of weeks ago. Both have been great to work with, but Sam is on the forum and has a 40 (I think) so when you call he usually knows exactly what your looking and what your trying to do.

Thanks for the advise and support and please let me know how to proceed with the membership.

Thank you's

Thank you goes out to Ramon for the opportunity to purchase a much needed bezel and Marshall, Trollhole for the throttle linkage. Installed the linkage today and hope to get to the bezel soon, I hope.

I know it has been a while since I had a post but it has come to the slow stage of the build. Lots of little stuff that I have to take a backseat on. Hopefully we keep moving forward and start this thing soon. Did get the new radiator installed along with new hoses and all new water lines and fuel flex lines. More pics to come. Thanks again to everyone for the help and encouragement.

Progress

Other "little" things completed this past week(s) were the installation of the shifters and the new inner and outer boots on both shifters. We also installed new flex fuel lines and water hoses. The biggest thing was a new "custom" return fuel line. The PO of the engine had a flex line for a return fuel line and I wanted to try and get a hard line installed. My father in law spent several hours bending fitting and bending the new five foot line. So as of today we have new hard return line all the way to the return line in the frame. Looks great!! We also installed a new battery tray and locked down the carb and adjusted the linkage. Now on to the exciting? part, electrical. Oh boy, cannot wait. I don't understand any of it and hope to take a look at someones 40 in the area to make sure we get it right. Then on to the vacuum lines. I did (no picture) finally get the entire under side of the 40 covered in por 15. I had done the frame earlier and had some left so I decided to complete the underside of the truck. On Sunday begin studying the coil and what to do with it next. Also I owe and explanation for the new avatar and the new name. Soon to come...

Excellent! Starting to look more and more like a completed truck:grinpimp:

It's Official

Well after almost two years of lurking it's official, like a referee with a whistle. Sent my money into ONSC and got my TLCA #. I guess I'm a new member! To celebrate I purchased a "new" shirt to show support.

Not sure, went to the ONSC website, in the search block I put "Store" found the link to "cafe press" they can print that logo on anything. Someone must have set it up sometime ago I assume.

I forgot about those shirts... Allen, you might be the only other one to have one of those...??

What's in a name?

I'm sure some of you are wondering just why, out of now where up comes this clover for an avatar? Well, after reading threads everyday for over a year now I come to understand that nearly everyone has a name for their 40. I told my wife, we have to come up with a name, a fitting name for the green 40. After several days and many names tossed around we came to "Clover."

Many reasons came to mind "after" the name. Mainly her story. I hit it shortly on page one but here it is in better detail. In 1992 my dad, having always wanted a Land Cruiser found it for sale in Garner off Woodland Road. I remember being 21 years old and having already owned a 4x4 jacked up truck and K5 blazer, I wondered what this would be. I was in college at East Carolina at the time and remember taking "official" ownership of the vehicle in 1993 the same year my wife and I were married. We used the 40 as a second vehicle and drove it sparingly with all aspirations of restoring her to better than new. The idea I think had come from my step mother's brother, John West. John has been known in Raleigh as a master engine builder, excellent mechanic and true Toyota enthusiast. I remember John having an old FJ40, tearing it down to the frame and building it back complete with 400 Chevy small block that would chirp the tires in third gear. Awesome truck, and that must have inspired me. Saw a picture of it just the other day, white in color blue strips, soft top with stock wheels and a bow tie.

I tried for years to piece together new parts from SOR (all I knew of back them) and do what little I knew to make it better. But realizing that parts were hard to find and very expensive I was getting no where. Fast forward to 1998 when we had one child with another on the way and a change in jobs coming we made the decision to sell the 40. John said he would buy it and fix it as he had done others so I was pleased with where it would go and what it would become. The deal was done.

Years later I still had the fix to buy a vehicle "like" the 40 and restore it. I knew I could not afford the parts before so I purchased a 1984 CJ-7. Drove it for years as is, then saved money and restored it to what I thought was excellent condition. But my hankering for that Land Cruiser never left. I always asked my dad about the 40 and if John had done anything with it yet. He had not. I would ask maybe once a year if he would ever sell it back mostly with no response. I always wanted another but knew it would be a while.

Then in the fall of 2009 dad said John would be willing to sell the 40, only to me, if I stilled wanted it. We went to his shop one day and took a look. There she was, just as I had last left her in 1998 with the 1999 inspection sticker still in the window. The 40 had been sitting outside sometimes covered sometimes not for 11 years. John had the opportunity to sell the 2F since he was going to put a Chevy in her. So here she was rusted (some say patina) with no engine. I thought, no way could I ever bring that back to life on my budget and my lack of knowledge of wrenches. I thought I'd take a pass.

Then on Christmas morning my dad and step mom stop by the house to exchange gifts when he asks me to look outside. Pulling in the driveway is a truck and trailer and the old 40 coming home. How lucky were we both? At first I thought what a long road ahead. Thanks to dad and my step mom who probably really pushed him to do it. The cruiser was mine again and the journey continues.

During the month of November and December when I first had the offer is when I found this site and the ONSC guys. It was then that I remembered when growing up my father in law was a member of the NC Corvair club and how cool it was to have like minded people sharing ideas on their old cars. I knew that with his knowledge of cars and since he had been the master mind behind the CJ we could do this. In less than a month a fellow on this site found me a 2F and off we go.

I know it sounds corny to name a vehicle but we though this one was appropriate considering the circumstances and being “lucky.” The deal I have now with my dad is I cannot sell the 40, ever. He said he has bought it twice and thats enough. So the instruction to my wife is it must be given to our kids and once I’m gone then they can do whatever. I always thought it cool to see guys with names for their cars and always wonder the meaning or story behind them. Guess I just wanted to share mine and the reasoning for the avatar and the “new” name for the old 40.

Pics are vintage from '93 see it did once have a decent paint job.

Deuce, did you get the vacuum and ignition coil diagram worked out? The past week has been busy for the family, as we're in the process of putting an offer on a house off Old Stage...

Yes shirts can be purchased on the cafe press store. If you have any special requests let me know and I will update things. Very easy and I think allen will speak for the quality of the products.

Been a while

Looks like over two months since I last updated anything on this post. The progress on "Clover" slowed to a stop for a little over a month or so. Sometimes just need to step away. We're back though. Three weeks ago did some little things and fired the engine up. Ran smooth for not having started the transplant in two years. Since then I have purchased and installed a new choke cable, new battery, flushed the tank and today ordered a new heater valve (old one was leaking) and a 2.5 Old Man Emu lift kit. I am suppose to pick up my front bib, fenders and new stock wheels this week from the painters. I'll post up some pics this weekend of the progress.
