Another 8274 rebuild question...
When I took the motor apart it had clearly been run too hot, the fabric wrapped around the coils is gone in some places. I don't use a winch much but obviously I want it ready to go when called upon. I assume that means I need to get a new motor, or can this one be expected to work with some degree of reliability? Is it possible to repair inexpensively? If it does need replaced, has anyone seen a good deal on a replacement lately?
Thanks for any input.

More important than the condition of the windings is the condition of the armature where the brushes contact the motor. The windings don't move and don't generally go bad.

I replaced mine with a Chinese motor from DB Electric, but it went bad after less than a year so I replaced that with a 6hp Warn motor for a 9.5xp winch.

If the coils are shorted together, it won't have the same level of magnetism and it won't develop as much power, but it would probably still work. Usually the armature goes first and throws solder from the commutator.
New motors are cheap compared to a new 8274.

Thanks for the input guys, will go with a new motor to be on the safe side.
