Hey everyone, I’ve got an 80 Series Land Cruiser with an automatic transmission, and I often need to use low range for steep hill climbs when off-roading. My question is: if I’m climbing a steep hill and it’s too much for the car, causing it to roll backward, what’s the safest way to reverse down?

Should I roll back in Drive, shift to Neutral (dont think so due to loss of engine break), or try to put it in Reverse ( 1. While still standing , 2. While rolling on case I can't stop the car ) and use light acceleration to control the descent?

Looking for the best advice to stay safe and avoid damaging the vehicle. Thanks!

You can’t use the engine as a brake, unless the gear selection matches the direction of the vehicle’s motion. Disregarding this will cause the engine to stall and possible serious damage to the transmission. The 80 series is a relatively heavy vehicle and power steering and power brakes are necessary for controlling the vehicle off road.
