Here are some things that you can look at to give it quick visual check and run through.
- spools in under power
- spools out under power
- free spools out
- give the controller a visual check for damage, loose pieces, etc
- check the controller cable and plug for damage
- check the cable for kinks, burrs, broken strands, crushed spots, basically any damage
- Check the hook and connector link or other form of attaching the hook to the cable for visual damage
- is the hook gate still present (they often are not)
- is the gate bent?
- any visual damage to the winch itself? Check the four mounting feet - both where they directly bolt/mount to a bumper or other mounting surface, and also the body of the winch itself for cracks.
If it checks out well enough then I'd go for it. You might want to go ahead and count on pulling the gears out, cleaning out the old grease and adding new. If you aren't in a hurry you could pull the gears on site to see if they are rusted from water intrusion.
Good luck!
