I am having trouble shifting. It won't go in to gear very easy at all, it will not go into reverse at all when it is running. The other thing about it is how intermitent it is. It only happens every 3 out of times I drive it. I originally thought it was a possible leaky slave of master cylinder. So I ordered a repair kit for both of them and put it in. I have bleed the line many times and am pretty sure that there is no more air in it. I have run a whole bottle of fluid through it, making sure that the resevoir doesn't go below half full, and have not seen any air coming though the tube I attached to the breather. I am stumped. Any thoughts as to whether it is a bad clutch or my transmission? I originally thought a bad clutch would be one that would slip. It doesn't slip when it is in gear and once it is in gear it drives fine. Any thoughts.

Makw sure the clutch is adjusted properly. It should have a bit of freeplay at the top of pedal stroke but most of the stroke should be operating the clutch. It could be a leaky master. Is fluid dripping down the inside of the firewall behind the carpet? Is the fluid level low in the res'?

I think that it is a tranny issue, unless you are not letting the clutch out all the way.

Ditto on Jman and Brian. I have had such issues with a '60 series H42 before. Don't wait too long or you won't be shifting at all!!
$20 and about 2 hours and it will be fixed.

2 hrs??? 45 min. tops . However I think rhe problem is in the adjustment... a simple check would be to (with the engine off and trans in neutral) reach up and feel the play on the shift fork, If it is too loose The cluch will not ingage. if it is too tight the cluch will slip.
On the other hand a simple way to see if it's the seat(little blue ring) Try lifting the shifter when shifting.if that helps replace the ring. help yjos helps

I have tried adjusting the clutch by the shatft that come out of the slave cylinder, i have adjusted it to the point where I dont' get any grip out of the clutch. I am going to try the shift seat, and we will see from there. I hope that is the problem. If not I dont' know what is?

I see you have a Vortec in there. Is this a hybrid Chevy clutch/Toyota release cyl or a completely Toyota clutch setup? Was the setup working well and then developed a problem? It is a Toyota tranny, right?

It is a toyota Slave cylinder, with a chevy clutch

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the GM clutch release fork has more stroke than the Toyota setup. Maybe your master cyl has a minor intermittant leak causing you to lose just a bit of stroke at the slave cyl? I'd rebuild or replace the master and see if it helps.

Uh, where do you get the bushing? 20 bucks ehh? cool. I know my bushing is on the shot side of things. when I pick up the shifter when I shift it shifts fine but when I am lazy it shifts a little rough....leading me to believe it ye-old bushing? 2 hour job? yeah prob. to put those fawking bolts back in for the boot on the shifter ugh that was a pain when I had my tranny out. 1 hour 37mins putting boot bolts back in, the rest peeing behind your truck and putting the bushing and shifter back on. So , dude 20 bucks....tell me where, pllleeeaaasseee

I just ordered one from my Toyota dealer for $17.97, they didn't have it in stock but it will be here by Tuesday, no shipping. Specter also sells them I didn't check how much they were but I am sure it is pretty similar.

I have rebuilt both the master and slave cylinder just two weeks ago. I seemed to work for a while after that, however it was very intermitent. Now it just doesnt' shift easy at all. I am going to try the shifter seat and I will keep you posted. Thanks for all the input.

I would think that it is clutch related due to not being able to get into reverse (no synchro to blame there), but that is not taking into account the little nylon cup at the bottom of the gearstick.
Sounds like the clutch is sticking (not disengaging) for it not to go into reverse.
Once again, that is disregarding shift assembly problems!

2 hours can almost include the leisurely drive to the dealer to get the bushing as well! It'll make it shift like new.

Yea... you are probably right...Drive to daeler, talk to cute girl at desk, stop at store to buy beer,
go to buddies house to pick him up and and then when your done clean the garage....:)
