I bought a set of used ome suspension from another mud member. One of the front shocks has messed up threads so I need to replace it. Figured I should probably buy a pair of fronts so they match (keep the used ones for spare).

The springs I got have tags on them and I can see they are the are the 860/851 combo (2 1/2 inch medium springs?).

The struts don't have any OME part number like I see on the vendors (slee) web site (like a N73, N73L, N74E, N74L) or anything like that. They only have some stamped part numbers on the body. Is there a way to cross reference the stamped part number with the number vendors use?

I want to order some new front shocks, but I want to have them matched to the rear shocks which I am re-using. Figure if I can decipher the rear shocks I will know what to ask for when I call slee offroad.

If you have any tips or ideas, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Charlie

edited my spelling error...

What is the number you have?

Some of OME's shocks are made by Monroe, others are made in Aus (they usually use the "N" number).

I would call up to ARB in Seattle, they will get you all figured out. :D

The numbers on the shocks ->

Fronts: 5953 PD07TA2B
Rears: 59532 PK19UA1B

They're yellow, the top line says "Gasmatic".

They were sold to me as OME and I have no reason to doubt that they are. But, they do say "Made in USA". I thought ARB/OME shocks were made in Australia.

Nope, many of their shcoks are now made in the USA to keep shipping costs down. Mechanically they are identical to the ones made over seas, but the part numbers are different. I looked at all the shocks I had in stock, some had similar numbers but nothing exact... Try Tim up at ARB

gasmatic is a monroe shock brand.

Well, they are not OME...

I called ARB. The ones I was sold are not OME shocks. He said ALL OME shocks are Made in Australia and stamped as such and also are stamped with the OME part number. He said these sound like plain old Monroes.

I'm not psyched.

I guess people need to watch out for "fake" OMEs. Might make sense to always just buy new from a trusted vendor to avoid wasting money on off brand parts.

Well that does suck. Contrary to other posts, OME have never been made in the US. OME are made under contract in one Monroe plant in Australia. They are not Monroe and according to the OME folks I spoke with years back in OZ, the only thing they share is yellow paint.

What you said is the exact same information I got from Buddy at ARB in Seattle. Never made in the USA, period.

I have pictures to show them side by side. I don't have a place to host them, but if someone does, I can send them to you. They are vastly different.

The OME are much thicker in diameter, have much more sturdy mounting points (posts) and have a longer stroke. Seeing them side by side, you could never confuse the two.

Hmmm?

I know for a fact that they have sent me OME boxed steering dampners marked "Made in the USA", I can't actually say I have seen a shock labeled as such. I just got off the phone with Steve in tech @ ARB. He verified that they do have some made under contract by Monroe here in the US. However, they should still have the OME part number stamped on them.

Great product, regardless of its origin... :D

Hmmm...

Hi Kurt,

Kurt, I'm not trying to make an argument - just sharing what I was told.

I didn't ask Buddy about steering dampers, only shocks.

The shocks I was sold do not have ARB part numbers, only Gas-matic and some longer part numbers as posted above. Not ARB/OME...

I can take some closeup pics of the stapmerd info if you want for future reference. Just let me know.

I feel like I got a bit screwed over by another mud member, and I want to make sure others look before buying so they don't get cheated also.

so, a little ot, but does anyone have a size chart for OME? you know, compressed length, extended length?

TIA

yup, I have(I think all of mine are) OME steering dampers made in the US as well, none of my shocks were however.

yes i have all the specs for the OME shocks........someplace, I have posted them before, same with the springs......gawd only knows what I did with em ;)

Fronts - 614mm open, 354mm closed (24" open, 14" closed)
Rears - 620mm open, 370mm closed (24.5" open, 14.5" closed)

The "L" series are 100mm longer.
