this has slowing been getting worse, I'm guessing it is original rubber.

WHEW.... I was worried before opening this one.... HA!

Rubber polymers break down over time, Heat, cold, cleaning chemicals etc... all eventually break it down. See this with older cars of all makes.

Older rubber didn't have as many treatments or additives back in the day.

My dad still uses baby oil to treat his weatherstip/rubber pieces on his 1955 BelAir once or twice a year.
