Is it OK to buy LC 100 (136000 miles) with rust in the axles?

Having a rusty truck always made me feel like I was leasing it - because I knew I'd only have it for a few years, and have to start over on another.

You knew the answer to your question before you asked. Just needed others to concur. Rust never gets better.

The LC has more rust than I would like; but on looking at the photos, the rust is not as bad as I would have expected from life in MI. If I planned to keep it for about 5 years, I would consider it if the price is good. But LCs last a long time, so I would typically plan on 10+ years, in which case I would consider one with less rust.

Attempting to find rust free vehicles in the south has its challenges. Many low mileage vehicles for sale are from up north, so one has to check them out. Other vehicles may be in the south but traveled a lot, including snow country in the winter. When I lived in KS, I frequently used the under carriage car washes during the winter. We still have a 94 Toyota that has remarkably little rust from its early years in KS. I have seen southern vehicles for sale with more rust than it; I suspect because when they drove in snow and salt (frequently used in winter storms in the south), the owner did not know how to take preventive care. There are also fewer enclosed car washes in the south that can operate in freezing temperatures.
