i have a 93 with 110 k been using syn for many years now i have a few oil leaks, some say it from the use of synthetics. I am goin to get the leaks fixed and would like to go back to regular oil i have heard this shouldn't be done any thoughts very much appreciated?
It is best practice to pick an oil (brand & weight) and stay with it but switching back to Dino will not cause any particular harm, probably wont fix your leak either, syn will not casue leaks but it may find ones that dino cannot. it is often thinner than the weight implies and also has slightly more cleaning ability, you could probably reduce the leak by going to a heavier weight but do not exceed the AUS weight recomendation for the temp range you are likely to see

I understand some synthetics have seal swellers or some sort of stop leak in them. I don't know. I have 155k on my 80 and no leaks.
Does anybody know which synthetics have that, so evsweat1 doesn't have to go back to the 20th century?

Cary is the expert with this stuff but my basic understanding is that nowadays all synthetics are equipped and engineered with additive packages. Among other things in the additive packages are seal conditioners, cleaners, and other 'stabilizers'. I read somewhere, I think 'Automobile' that when synthetics were first introduced they came from pure synthetic stock and had no additive package as such. These oils did have difficulty with seals that were already worn or exposed to petroleum solvents like gasoline etc. so these oils did leak "more" than the dino oils would have. These problems, from what I understand, are from times past. Nowadays if your oil leaks its cause the seals are simply past the oil holding ability. As someone stated, the synth might "find" leaks that the dino would not but then again the synth will not congeal and coagulate like dino will in the presence of air and heat. Anyway, synth is not the problem, the seals are. HTH.

Switching back and forth from dino to synth oils makes no nevermind.

Right, except synth is soooo much better, so are you saying it makes no nevermind it terms of the seals?
Dude, if you're going to fix the leaks, then why not stick with synthetic? To say what's already been said a jillion times (aka "pulling out the cricket bat") the synthetic oil didn't cause your leaks. And it's a better oil for your engine.
Synthetic is not causing your leaks. You can switch back and forth between synth and minerals with no ill effects. About the only thing RavenTai and I don't fully agree on is switching oils. I tend to fall into the school that there may be a benifit from switching brands once in a while to benifit from different additive packages that may clean, protect in different ways. That is purely speculation and no more valid than the idea of sticking with one oil.
On the 80, my default is, and will remain, Mobil 1. If yours has run from low mileage on synthetics, your motor is pristine. Don't mess that up now. You can switch back if you want but why would you? I think the 80 is a "lifetime" vehicle like the Land Cruisers preceeding it, so treat it to the care and respect it deserves. Get your leak fixed. My bet it's something simple like the valve cover gasket.
