I need to help out a buddy and buy his winch. Its an 8274. He needs $650 for it. I have one already, so I don't really need it. I would be helping him out though. What do you guys think? It is in good shape.

that'd be better than half price of a brand new. Define "good shape" Is it operational?

I say jump on it it if works. That is a steal for that winch....

It has a mounting plate for a CJ. Maybe I'll try to sell it over on the Jeep forum.

Are you looking at buying the winch or selling it for him?

I bought it from him because he needed money quickly. I don't need it because I have one already. Therefore, I will most likely sell it.

Sorry to crash you clubhouse, but.

Good price if it's an 8274-50. The 8274-50 is the newer one with the "T" handle on the side versus the 8274 round ball and the controller plugs into the side of the solenoid box on the 8274-50 as apposed to the front. The solenoids for the older 8274's can be dificult to find.

"Mint" 8274's seem to sell for around $500 and that is with new cable and a good controller and the fairlead.

I heard you could just use a Ford starter selenoid. Though I heard that on the internet so no clue if its true.

If you flip the 8274 for a profit will your give your friend the cash to help him out? Sounds like he needs the cash.

Just curious.

I investigated this a couple of years ago and you can't or at least you shouldn't. The physical dimensions are right, but the starter solenoids are not rated for continuous duty. You need a continuous duty solenoid the same shape. There is one source that I posted awhile back if you want to search.

$650 seems steep, but $500 would be a good deal. I'd offer that, but if you don't want the winch, why would you buy it? If he'll go $500, you could probably flip it to someone here for the same price. The only problem is shipping which on a 125 pound winch is going to be steep.

I already bought it from him for $650. He needed that much money to pay his mortgage and I wanted to help him out.

I think I will clean it up a bit and try to get my money back.
