I liked the first version but I think angling the mount 20 degrees upwards would improve the readability and still would fit the look of the dash without appearing pasted on.

Great job... A couple of observations,
1. Find a new charger...preferably a good quality one that doesn't generate much radio noise. ( I run a full size iPad in my truck along with ham radio and the noise generated from the charger is pretty bad)

2. Consider the garmin glo Bluetooth antenna...it's very fast on satellite lock up and needs no separate app...I run a separate USB cord up through the windscreen vent to power this.

3. Might or might not be worth considering...but for street nav garmins street pilot app works pretty well.

I'll be following this thread for further developments and possible rework of my gear now lol

Really great job. My respect to anybody that can work with fiberglass like that. Thank you so much for such a well documented write up.

I think that USB charger u have is rated for 3 amps.

You should charge far more than that. Seriously, that's a lot of work and a very quality product. :)

Have you noticed any issues seeing the iPad during the day since the 95-97 radio location is kinda down to the right of the driver?

Beautiful work. I've been talking about doing this since before I picked up my 80. I've put in a satellite dish mount which holds my iPAD, GPS, iPhone and what not but it totally blocks the radio all together. If I had an iPad mini, I might rip this thing out and send you my dash bezel. You're using all the same parts I spec'd out and everything. Maybe I'll find a donor dash bezel and have you work one up for me.

How is the iPad held in and released? Is it just a friction fit, would it hold up bouncing around off road?

Now for the hard part... In this case it wasn't that bad because I picked up an extra dash bezel, so I wasn't chopping up my one and only. At this point I didn't do as good of a job taking photos so some pits are missing but you get the picture. I'm loosing the ash tray, the cigarette lighter/charger and one of the empty dash spots. I had to trim the right side of my a/c controls due to the width of the tray.
I used super glue to hold it in place, then followed up with Epoxy. Then bondo on the front to fill gaps and sand smooth to match the bezel. More ABS plastic was used on the lower section to fill the void where the ashtray, cigarette lighter/charger used to be. These were superglued, then epoxied and body filler applied. I kept two holes to allow access to the mounting screws that are normally right behind the ashtray. Epoxied a 90 degree ipad extension cable in place.

Lots of sanding, more filler, sanding, more filler... Once things looked good. Primed with filler primer and then followed up with spot putty to fill the small pin holes. Continued to sand, prime, putty... I have no pictures of this, it was a mess and didn't keep my phone near by...

So once everything looked good, layed down a few coats of black and allowed to dry. While it setup I worked on the interior electronics. I didn't get any pictures of this setup but I used a piece of an old white plastic cutting board and mounted everything to this. I used the stereo mounting brackets and mounted the cutting board to this. The 6 channel audio controller was too big to fit behind the dash so it lives in the glove box. It is fixed to the back and still allows for normal glove box crap to live in there.

I will get some pictures of the electronics when I open it back up. It's not charging like it should. I charging much slower than it should and if the Ipad is doing stuff it's not holding it's charge... So I think the 5v converter isn't going to work. I'm thinking of using the cigarette lighter/charger and running a USB to micro usb behind the dash.

Need to get a piece of suede to back the tray. It'll look nice and slide smoother.

And I just went out and bought an HU with bluetooth... :meh:

Seriously though that's awesome work. Bravo!

.

That's looks great. I wish Apple would let you resize the app buttons.

35" toyo MT's. They weren't loud new but have been getting louder over time... I need to replace some weather seal stuff and the gasket around the steering wheel through the firewall is a gaping hole and I think this makes it louder than it should be. All the more reason for Ipads and loud music. ;)
