After a lot of messing around with these iPhone 6 Plus dashes. 3d printed objects don't hold up over time. They tend to warp with heat and the fit and finish goes to s*** over time. There are high quality injection molded kits you can pick up here for iphone, ipad, ipad mini or even nexus 7:

Dude that is totally awesome. Great job!

That's pretty cool. I know some of the dez-racers have been trying to use iPads as nav devices over a dedicated Lowrance unit, but AFIK they have been unable to find a good antenna for the job.

Cute. Seen similar things done with the Nexus 7 in Mk5 volkswagens

I haven't had problems issues with the Bad Elf as GPS even inside the dash. Once I launch Gaia GPS it takes about 1 minute for the gps to find satellites and I'm good to go.

Very cool. Way to think out of the box and exicute it.

Awesome job. Using this for gps, do you ever have problems with service drops? I use my iphone but sometimes with no signal - no maps etc.
I would like to do something similar to this - again great job.

Scott- AWESOME job. Crazy coincidence, but I've been looking to do the very same thing as a stereo replacement, right down to the iPad Mini (Retina)! I've been researching the past few months, in fact. I would be VERY interested in purchasing one of these from you. Please check your PM.

Outstanding !!! I almost went down this road and now wish I did....... the glare and screen angle on the double -din nav and interface leave a lot to be desired once you're used to using an Ipad....

How's the audio output running thru the Ipad / amp ?

nice work !

So this is day 1 in the car, drove about 40 miles today in town using Gaia downloaded street maps and the Bad Elf GPS. Reception wise it was fine never lost signal, it just takes a few minutes to obtain a signal and worked fine after that. When I was almost home this evening it stopped charging and the GPS dropped so I'm guessing the bad elf backed out of the extension cable enough to loose connection... I'm going to use some electrical tape to hold the two together a little better. Not fun to have to tear into the dash so hoping to get all the bugs worked out in one try.

I do have a spare dash laying around now since this wasn't the original. If anyone is interested in one, I'd be willing to do it again. You'd have to purchase all of the electrical components and install.

Scott
What about doing it with a later model dash? I have a spare one if you want to experiment ;)

First rate job.

You might be running into an issue with not enough horse power to charge the iPad. iPads take twice the amperage to change as a phone. If the accessories were meant for a phone that's your issue..

Way to update a 3fe!!:bounce::bounce:

Scott- Grim is right. It sounds like you're using a 1A charger and your iPad needs a 2.1A charger for max charge rate. The slower charge rate of a 1A charger might work under normal circumstances, but your Bad Elf GPS also gets its power from the iPad (and that's a pretty high-draw device), so it won't do in your case.

I think you are right, if I plug in the Ipad completely dead, it will charge until it turns on. Once it turns on it cannot maintain the charge and it begins to slowly die. Not as fast as if it was unplugged completely but still looses it's charge. Search is on for a new 5 v micro usb charger.

NICE!!

I'd try to find an Apple-certified(?) car charger that you can cannibalize. Something that can handle 2.1A or higher.

I'm going to pull it out tonight and test some stuff out. I have some good usb 2.1A chargers that plug into the cigarette lighter which I can plug back in and test with. I'm really hoping it's something other than the extension cable that is epoxied into the dash piece that would mean work...

That dash doesn't look like a 3fe... Mine looks completely different. Sure it's not a fz dash?
