Been thinking about getting a power inverter. Any thoughts or suggestions?

what do you plan to run off of it? Size does matter :D

I picked up a 700W inverter at a marine supply for about $40. I ran an extra 12 outlet (cig.lighter type) to the back of my center console facing the back seat. I tucked the inverter under the front passenger seat and plug it in whenever I need it. It will run my laptop AC adapter, charge my phone or camera. It will not run my dremel or any power tools. Having it under the seat keeps it out of sight and I keep a 4 ft extension cord plugged into it that easily reaches the floorboard of the front passenger seat, so that I don't have to dig way under the seat to plug a device in.

They make inverters large enough to run a microwave oven, if you want to spend a few hundred bucks. (Ask Steen about his mack-daddy inverter;))

Some simple multiplication [volts x amps = watts] will help you decide what size to get. Here's a handy link for helping you figure out what size to get. Keep in mind the inverter itself will consume about 15% of its rated capacity.

I had a 400 watt in the christmas parade to run the inflatable snowman, and had to keep the throttle out and ride the brakes the whole time. Could have been the alt. , but they do use a lot of power.

I got a Vector 1500W at the Black & Decker distributor warehouse in Fort Mill last Friday for $65.

I figure I'll use it for all of the above...am I gonna need a dual battery setup?

I figured I couldn't pass it up.

Very nice. That should power the TV and Sat as well as JP's heating blanket very well.

What is the computer hookup for? A remote?

I'd plan on another battery if you don't want to worry about killing your battery. I can check the local Interstate batteries here and see if they have any of the smaller optima blue or yellows that are blems.

Nice. Where in Fort Mill is this B&D distributor warehouse and do they have more?

I've used a small, portable Vector power inverter for years and it has been great.

Thanks Marshall. I figured it would be good enough. I'm not in a hurry right now though. I'm still trying to find threads to read about electrical stuff. You see...boombapslappy + electrical stuff = I need the "for dummies" version AND someone to show me how. Besides, I gotta get this thing running the way it should before I worry about having TV.

c4l: The B&D warehouse in less than a mile from 77 off of carowinds blvd. They had a sale last weekend. It's no longer available as far as I know.

edit: yes, there is a seperate remote you can buy for it.

City of Alpharetta has me on speed dial in case the grid goes down... they plug me in and I can keep em running for a while. :D

Those larger inverters will only work with SHORT heavy cables directly to battery.
