intro new fj80 owner with questions

Hi guys just bought an 1997 collectors ed. from a workmate of mine and it has a couple of issues.
1st- right side of front axle is pouring out what looks like well used c/v joint grease ( I am hoping just a new seal will do it) Looking for an idea on time frame to complete this r/s rebuild of the front axle (I have a whole shop at my disposal as I manage a porsche repair shop in new jersey) can I do this in one day or am I dreaming?
2nd- this thing has a dual battery set up from painless wiring and I believe that 1 it is not so painless or it was not set up correctly ( as a side note where do your voltmeters run @ idle this thing is just a wee bit above half, I have not tested it yet.)

thanks for the input

Colin

Welcome
The front end reseal is a one day deal with a well setup shop. Look up "Birfield Repack" and it will tell you what needs to be bought and what needs doing .

As for the Painless kit I'd put all that fun crap out and start fresh :)

You might as well rebuild bothe sides of the front axle. An opportunity to throw new rotors on their as well. It can be done in a long day. Lots of threads here use the search function focusing on the 80's section. If one side needs it, likely the other is close behind.

Welcome

cool on the info for the front end thanks alot.
as for the brakes it has recent man-a-fre DBA (disc brakes autralia) job with new pads and stainless braided lines sa as far as brakes I am in good shape.

Welcome!
at least you're moving up, going from Porsches to LCs (well, at least when it comes to offroading...) :D

hey koffer,
any good wheeling down by you for the big trucks ( 80's)
About the only wheeling I have around here is my muddy driveway

Second the opinion on the offroad ability of the porsche's

I am trying to get in with the local Land Rover guys uphere to go wheeling with (since we service alot of their vehicle's) I am little scared though  those frieken d-90's flex ALOT!

Jers,
Welcome to the board :flipoff2: . Where at in NJ are you (I'm just west of Morristown)? Look into joining Gotham City Land Cruisers (www.gclcny.com ) we have runs a few times a year including some guys that are mostly stockers and some guys that aren't.

As Koffer mentions, the front end is nothing more than a long day. Perhaps not so long for him or for you after your first one, but for some of us it still takes a long Sat or Sun.

Ditch the painFULL setup. All their stuff sucks and is grossly misnamed. Either go with the Hellroaring set up or with an isolator setup. Both of these have been discussed in the Outfitting forum on this site. I have the isolator (using a surepower isolator), but there is plenty of feedback on all the setups.

Also post up a pic when you can. We always like pics no matter if they are stock or not, unless it's LX-Extreme - even then we just like to give him grief.

BTW, post 92 they were FZJ80 not FJ80, so you may want to ask Woody (this is his site) to change your screen name if you so desire :D
