Hello all! Here's my intro post:
I've been working on cars since I was 16. Been through many vehicles since. Had a 3rd gen 4Runner a few years ago that I fixed-up and I eventually sold it to some high-school kid. Pretty much instantly regretted that. I've been hunting a project car/truck for a while. Decided I'd keep my eyes open for a Land Cruiser this go around. Purchased a 1996 LX450 about a month ago. It's never left Mobile, AL. Tons of miles, but the frame has been thoroughly rust-proofed over the years with various oil leaks haha. Body is in acceptable shape overall minus the front and rear bumpers. Engine runs smoothly and trans shifts predictably. I'm sure a rebuild will eventually be in its future, but hopefully I can put that off for a while.

First thing I did was remove the oil-soaked hood insulation (fire hazard) and thoroughly cleaned the oil from the hood. After the deep-cleaning I noticed the dents a bit more. New hood on the way to my local Lexus dealership (July 20% sale and free delivery to store) as well some other odds and ends. Had the NSS code that seems to be popular until I refurbished the module earlier today. The plastic arm had snapped off so the copper contacts weren't moving. Glued it back together. Sprayed out the old grease and then applied some new. Now I have working reverse lights, gear selector (cliche' dead 'D' bulb, though), and working cruise control again. Got some new Toyota bushings coming from Japan for the front-end. New steering damper OTW as well. Plan on redoing the knuckles in the coming weeks. New AC parts on the way (VERY hot with this high humidity. Lots of debris in the lines. I'll flush all the lines and throw in the new parts.) Also replaced the steering wheel with a used wheel from an LS400. Perfect fit with my existing airbag.

I've spent the last few weeks becoming acquainted with this particular vehicle's quirks (such as odd vacuum hose choices). Mostly I'm glad to have something to work on and dump entirely too much money into - haha. I've been letting my daughters help with whatever they can, so the bonding is a great plus. (I let them each pick something to fix. Youngest wanted the cracked passenger tailight replaced - Done. Thanks ebay. Oldest wanted to clean the back seats and cargo area. I put her to work vacuuming and scrubbing. She wanted to sit in the back with the sliding window.) At least getting the kids involved helps with the wife's approval. (Wife would prefer the door panels not look so bad. Not sure there's an affordable solution she'd be happy with haha.)

I've gotta say thanks in advance for the wealth of knowledge in these forums - it's unmatched. I feel like I can tackle most jobs just by looking through these threads. Looking forward to getting this LX back up to spec.

Welcome to mud. You’re in good hands.

I’ve done a lot to the LX since acquiring it. Redid the front end bushings. Sway bar bushing was completely gone on the driver side - that clunk is now gone. Drivability is greatly improved with the new radius arm bushings. New front tires to match the rears. AC works great since I gutted and replaced everything - the drier had disintegrated and the little beads were clogging the expansion valve. Got the old beads out and cleared the hard lines. Recharged the system. Good as new.

New harness for the speed sensor at the transfer case. Old one had a wire nut holding everything together haha.

Replaced the Oxygen sensor at the cat with a brand new OEM. Replaced the nuts as well. Runs closed-loop now. Old nuts were trashed.

Redid the front seats. Replaced the gears and the passenger side motor. The bottom seat frame was fractured on the driver side - welded it back together and redid the foam. Much more comfortable and adjustable now.

Discovered wet rear carpets after driving through some heavy rain. The floor pan drain plugs (basically stickers) had come loose after so many years. Lifted the carpet and discovered a bit of rust. Forgot to take a pic of that. Stripped it down with a wire wheel. Cleaned the area and covered with POR-15. Dried out the rear quarter panels and replaced the partially peeling stickers with new rubber plugs. Went ahead and removed the 3rd row seats as well and put them into storage.

Pulled the valve cover off to replace the gaskets and to inspect the cam shafts. Not too shabby for 505k on the odometer. All new gaskets and valve cover bolts. Oil leaking has stopped (from the valve cover at least haha). Replaced some vacuum lines with OEM Toyota lines. Replaced the T and hoses going to the rear heater with OEM parts.

Currently working on rebuilding the passenger front lock actuator. Already replaced the rear passenger. Also got the remote for the locks. Works well. I’ve held off rebuilding the knuckles since I anticipate rebuilding/replacing the front 3rd member.

Nice work on the seats.
I may have missed it...
Where did you get the covers?
Any advice/lessons learned?
I used the LSeat covers. Took about two weeks to ship. I’m sure one day they will show some wear, but as you can see from the photos it’s a hell of a lot better. The price was right.

Definitely get hog ring pliers with a spring to make life easier. Longer handles will help too. The job is not too hard, just tedious. Did the passenger seat first to practice for the driver side. Also, make sure to warm the covers a bit when stretching them back onto the seats. Much easier.

I have never done any type of upholstery work and I wouldn’t hesitate to try it again based on this experience.

Since your rear floors were wet, you need to address the sunroof rear drains. That's a classic symptom of it leaking there and running down the C pillars.

Thanks for the advice. Already checked while I had everything pulled apart. Both draining beautifully in the rear. Fronts also good. Headliner dry as a bone

Edit: also didn’t notice any rusting or evidence of water intrusion in the C pillar. Should be good, no?
