Hey folks,
Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Justin and my wife Kerrie Anne and I live right next to stone mountain park. We're very mild to moderate wheelers and just like to find more places to get the 80 dirty. So far we're only been up to blairsville and Tatum lead and some small local stuff but we're planning a trip to Big bend in texas!

Sooner or later we'll show up at some meetings or something.
Anyway, I want to learn how to rebuild a front end on an 80. If there's anyone local doing anything like that soon I'll volunteer to help. You can email me at jloyd@simplygreenlawncare.com. I've got a 96 tacoma too if anyone's doing a timing belt on a 3.4 soon I want to learn how to do that too!

You were not specific regarding the rebuild of the front axle on your 80, but I will assume you need new seals for the outer knuckles. It is not hard to do; primarily it is messy and fairly time consuming. Several of the local members will be able to share their experience when they went through the knuckles on their trucks.

When I did the knuckles on my wife's 80, I added new wheel bearings, grease seals, axle tube oil seal, brake rotors and pads to the knuckle rebuild project. My motivation was there was over 100k miles of wear on these parts, so I felt it was worth the time and added cost to cover these items when I had it disassembled. As I recall, it took me a complete Saturday and more than half of Sunday to complete it solo. This is only food for thought, because you will have your own criteria.

Also FYI, the STLCA is holding a workshop day on December 8th in Manchester TN. This would be a long haul, but I think one of the potential projects is an axle knuckle rebuild for an 80, plus a 60. This may give you an opportunity to see the similarities and differences in rebuilding these two types of Cruiser axle knuckles in a single day. The details are available for in the STLCA forum if you want to review them.

Thanks for your quick reply. Actually, in spite of 120k miles, the seals are not leaking and there are no undue noises or such coming from the front axle. I just don't want to wait until its in bad shape to take care of it. I want to learn how before that time comes so I can order the parts and wait for a nice time to get to it. I'm not looking for help, I'm looking to help! I just want to find someone who has done it before and needs an extra set of hands to do it again!
What is the STLCA? I don't mind making the drive to learn something. Im just one of those people that can honestly say that although others may know HOW to do it better, I'll take the TIME to do it better. I just never feel right having someone else work on my rig!

The STLCA is the TLCA chapter in TN. They host GSMTR each spring and due to the draw of this event have members from a number of states. The shop work day could be just what you are looking for in an opportunity to observe, help and learn what it takes to rebuild the knuckles.

All the points you made about doing it yourself are on the money (in my opinion). I also try to do as much maintenance and repair on my truck as I can for the reasons you noted, but also so I know how to repair it in the woods if I have a problem.

hmm, I'll just repost here what i posted over in Leaky...

I actually have to rebuild my front end REAL soon since my diff gasket is leaking.... again. My knuckles actually need the rebuild this time too so I'm basically overhauling the entire axle. Oh yeah, I also have a huge dent in the front of the dif and really have no idea how the ring is not rubbing, it might be. While I'm in there I'm going to pound the dent out and then weld a dif cover on the front (welding will probably not be the same weekend).

I'm up for a work party depending on place and time...

Interesting enough, we got another guy here in Auburn with a clicking birf and it's leaking as well. Started this week, so he's looking to need a knuckle rebuild plus...
I really have no idea how many wagons should be taken apart at once, and if anyone has a driveway/shop big enough. But it would be cool. Depending on aurunner18 (the other guy here), I'd almost be willing to make a trip....
 
I can fit three 80s in my garage...have a parts washer and enough jack stands for two.
 
Say it ain't so... Remember, I'm rotund, so I need lots of work space.

Do you still live in the same house with most of the basement open for garage space? If not, can you share the details of the 'new' garage?
 
Same place Larry, just cleaned out a LOT post divorce. I suspect your shop has more room.

Eric, I have a drive under raised ranch. You can pull an 80 in the far right and pull through to the other end of the house, then one behind it with about 10 feet between them, and then another to the left in the other bay.

I have rebuilt axles, done suspension work, etc no problem in this space. Not saying it is a wide open shop, but it is dry and warm.

(1)FJ80, (1)FJ40, (1)BJ70, (1)AllisChalmers CA (mowing tractor), (2)Triumphs (storing for a friend), (2)FJ40 Tubs on rolling work fixtures, (1)FJ40 Tub in a rolling storage fixture, (1)FJ40 rolling frame, plus a lot of misc. other items. When all is said, I should be able to brag about the available space, but I would need to pull vehicles out to equal the amount of space you have immediately available in your shop-basement. This is just an other reminder that I need to clean up and organize the shop better.

i will check my garage when I get home. I think that I have 4 OEM trunion bearings that I had gotten from Dan when I did mine (I accidently ordered an extra set). I will sell them to you at even more of a discount plus USPS Priority flat rate shipping. Let me make sure I have them and then check my invoice to see what I have in them. Should be able to save you a little $.

Definitely of interest, but ... My lovely bride will not allow further Cruiser additions without me completing what I have started; namely the frame-off restoration of my project '81 FJ40. We are like everyone else and have spent to where the budget is tight, but now with one in college and a second getting ready to start we are learning new definitions of tight.

Tempting, but I will not be calling on this truck.
