Is there a mount to get a tire carrier in the rear of an 80 that doesn't need third row seat mounts?

I have not seen a mount that does not attach to the vehicle in some way (safety issue). I guess you could just go very old school and use the tie downs and some straps. This could block the rear seats from being down, depending on your tire size.

The ones by Slee and @LandCruiserPhil are the two that come to mind as being the best option (both have specific mounting).

I want it to mount. I don't have third row seats. So I need something with another form of mount.

Literally says it mounts to the third row mount points. I don't have those.

This is what my floor looks like. There is nowhere to mount the common tire carriers

Dusten,

This may be more involved than you want to take on but if you could get the third row plates from one of the guys that part out rigs (@slow95z come to mind) you could have them drill them out IIRC they are just riveted or spot welded to the inner wheel tub and install. That would give you the floor mounting and then you could use a bar to reach the ceiling grab handle if there are mounting holes behind the trim.

Other option is what Devils Paw said and drill some mounts in the floor t accommodate.

In that case I don't see how you can have any sort of mount without drilling holes.

I'm not opposed to drilling. But I don't want to drill into metal that's not reinforced because the mount is designed to mount where playing and brackets exist. If that makes sense. I don't want to spend a fortune on a mount designed for another purpose.

Since nothing seems to exist it may be time to get with my fab buddy and have him build me one we can just weld in place and call it a day.

I suppose you could figure out something that mounts to the tie-down hook holes in back and runs all the way up to the mid row seats in front. The trouble with welding is that it's a lot less convenient to remove later. Just a thought.

The slee stripper pole mounts to where the grab handle goes, and drill into the floor for bolt and nut mount. He hasn’t made them in years you would have to find. I had one and it worked great held 37 with the rear seat in, got wheeled hard never had any issues. Would be easy to copy its design

This one uses only one of the third row seat mounts.
Would be easy to add some shims under that foot, and drill holes through the wheel well. Put welded washer and nut on the backside. Cut bolts flush with nut

I've looked at the bellfab in person. Look at the upper mounts. I have nothing up there either.

Pretty sure there'll be a flat section where the handle would typically mount to. You could drill and add rivnuts.

To add any kind of wheel cradle, you'll be drilling somewhere.

I wonder if there's reinforcing plates where third row seatbelts would bolt in?
Bellfab is using the top seat belt bolt location.
That could give you alternative bolt locations where there'd be clearance for factory bolts behind the panels.

Also, another alternate bolt location could be the four flat squares on your floor with no deadener, that's where third row seats latch down.

There is normally a 1" or so deep recess for the latches, so there would be clearance under the floor for bolts in those locations.
You'd have to just check if it's accessible with a sub-tank in place ( assuming yours has a sub??)
Interesting the pan is not recessed, but the sound deadener is clear of it.

Mounting the tire right in the middle basically makes the rest of my rear useless. It needs to be off to the side. I'm not giving up all rearward visibility for it.

The issue with where the grab handle would be is my headliner isn't molded like the ones with third row seats.

I'm not trying to hit and destroy my interior for a spare. If I can fab a simple and clean solution I'll get a swing out. I'd just prefer not to.

No I don't have a sub tank. It's an OEM fuel system. 25ish diesel gallons.

If you look at bellfabs photo gallery of their unit, it extends from wheel arch, almost to third row seat latch location.
No reason you couldn't do similar. The flat square area on the floor would be an easy place to mount something, with room underneath to fit a large washer to distribute load to prevent bolts pulling out in an accident
Bolt through the floor, and the wheel arch.
If you have no sub tank, lots of hdj81 did, you have the option to bolt through the floor anywhere.
I reckon with a couple of mounting points on the floor, and a couple on the wheel arch, you could get enough rigidity to not need a high level mount
Large square washer and nut under the floor to distribute load.
You could use harness mounting plates along with racing harness eye bolts for added tie down functionality.
30 seconds on Google found these from summit racing

Lay it on the floor and use the factory tie down and a ratchet strap
