Golly....
That was an intense ordeal. Ham radio might have helped or maybe a SPOT - At least they had people at home expecting them and ready to send help...

Great story with pics.....

That's quite a story. Should be good for a few more Ham licenses!

Cool story!

Arm chair quarterback moment- I woulda got busted out a snowmobile and had those guys back long before the helo, but their trucks would have definitely been staying...

Good to see people using their heads in a situation like that. All too often, you read about people who don't, and end up dead.

Those guys are amazingly lucky they were able to make it back alive. Young adults to often underemphasis the importance of being prepared. The fact that a few things thay should have taken into account was this is a El Ninnio year. A year where temperatures would be lower then normal and moisture levels higher.

Given the fact that a weather report should have been obtained before thay went onto some excursion should have been taken into account. To this day I really do not think 4x4 off roaders take into account the weather when starting there excursion.

Sat phone, CB, Ham radio will not help you in desperate times if the rescuing party cannot even attempt a rescue if conditions are bad enough. Basically you are on your own so be prepared for the worst that weather can bring you.

I do not know where the rescued party was standing when the helicopter pilot or crew spotted them but being in the right place ie in a open field or on a cliff ledge above the tree line can help significantly. Wearing bright cloths, having flares on each of you help the pilots to spot you from the air.

Depending on the terrain the pilots might have a extremely difficult time locating missing people from the air. Thay have a much easier time spotting you if you are next to your vehicle. In this case the vehicles were burried in snow so it would not have helped.

This was the case with the missing married couple that was taking a short cut across a mountain range and got stuck in the snow. Thay stayed several days in there car. the husband then left out of desperation and did not follow the road back to the highway "which he should have" . He instead had taken a river to what he though was a way out.

Air rescue found the car and the wife and kid but the husband had left on foot 24 hours earlier. They did find him but he died of hypothermia and exposure.

The moral of the story is to carry extreme weather cloths, carry food, communications equipment and NOTIFY people were you will be. Luckily the group of 4x4 off roadrers did just that. They filed a verbal drive plan for the back country and it possibly saved there lives.

Good story with a good ending :)

Great story! They played it smart and were more prepared than some of those people that get stuck out in the snow. I loved the homemade skis! Glad they made it out okay. I feel for the trucks though.
