First a little background....
I am building a 2010 79 series pick-up, using 75/7* series old style dash parts mounted on a US Spec 1996 FZJ80 frame, 1FZFE motor and stock automatic transmission.

I need help with the instrument cluster. I would like to use the 80 series instrument cluster because of the electronic speedo, gauges, ect... but, it is about 2 inches wider than the 70 series and with the "circuit board" style of the wiring in the back, I would think difficult to modify to make it fit the 7* series dash surround.

Question is, did any 70 series with the old style dash come with the 1FZFE motor with automatic transmission combination? If so, I was hoping that a 1996 7* series (if this year has the old style dash) with this combination may have the same wiring harness connections at the instrument cluster as that of my 80 series with that combination. Or is this just wishful thinking???

And the added issue, the instrument cluster would have to be in MPH and miles not Kilometers...

Pics of the 80 series instrument cluster and the 7* series instrument cluster.

Advice needed.

I have searched and see that the 1FZFE was put in the 1996 75 series, but they all look to have come with 5-speeds. Does anyone know if these speedometers were electronically or mechanically driven?

There is no way you can fixed the 80 cluster into the 70 dash. unless cut and paste. All 75 series speedometers are mechanically driven, only when comes to 79, then is electronically driven. In Japan, you can't find the 70 with gas motor only diesel. So there is slim chance that you can find this combination. I don't know about other countries.:)
By the way, why is there no dash in the set of cabin you have bought. Is truly smooth touching with the 2010 dash, with airbag, new design.....

i think you can make that work ...
a little fudge here and there.
the LJ78 came with the electronic auto 343
but
i am using mine.

keep an eye out for a dead LJ78 and work the magic.

Does the LJ78 have the same dash design as the 75 series?

I searched and found that the LJ78 came with the A343 transmission from 08/1991 - 04/1993, but I also found that they sell a speedometer cable. I know even the 80 series came with a non-electronic speedometer in other parts of the world.

Maybe I can convert my electronic speedo to non-electric and still have a speed sensor go to the VSS so the ECU still functions properly.

And lastly... The 80 series gauge cluster can be made to work. Almost anything can be made to work with the right craftsman working the issue and with funds not being a limiting factor. No dash in the body I bought. And I like the square lines of the older dash design.

Thanks Radd. I did find that out. I am off to inquire on the 80's forum about converting the electronic speedo in the 80 series to non electronic.

FZJ40

Check out Iron Pigs build in the hard Core section. he custom made an 80 gauge cluster fit into stock fj40 location, looks like if you just removed the gear indicator lights then worked some magic you could make it work I think it was called FZJ40

I'm getting confused... but, if it helps... i think early 80's (1991) had mechanical speedo. Or, you could just unscrew the speedo from the cluster and replace with the one you want (swap electric to non electric, etc.) on the 70 series. My 79 series has electric speedo, that I am pulling out (wiring harness is for non electric, but gauge cluster is later) and replacing just the speedo itself (from another 70 series cluster).

My concern is that if I just remove the electronic speedo and swap in a mechanical one that the ECU will no longer receive a signal from the transmission and not perform correctly. Or is this not the case.

Does the ECU receive a signal from the speedo?
The speedo drive coming out of the transfer case has wires that feed into the main wiring harness.

I have gotten no reply on the 80s forum..

Lets assume the 7* series I would use is 12 volt... I know the one in the picture is 24 volts and I will not be using this one. It is only in the photo for size comparison

Does anyone knows or has the part number of the complete cluster for a manual transmission. Without the P,R,N,D,2,1. Or the electronica board of the back My rig is a fj80 1990
