These washers need some spraying first. My concoction in 50% break fluid 50# nail polish remover.

Next hit them with a chisel such that you are pinching them in the gaps.

Search for "cone washers". Lots of threads discussing techniques etc.

Having paint in there will add to the 'fun'...

cheers,
george.

Let me clarify this statement: hit the HEAD of the stud with a brass drift or hammer! ;) Since the cone washers are painted, rotate them first to break the bond using snub nose pliers or similar.

I leave the nuts threaded on but flush with end of the studs and then hit a brass bar pressed against the nut/stud with a large ball peen hammer with sharp blows. This usually loosens them pretty easily and the nuts will keep the cone washers from flying off and getting lost.

or tap on the side of the hub with a brass hammer.

I remember your other thread. Good choice on the spartan! Install was pretty straightforward for me. Looking forward to the pics 😎

I looked into it and read where the Spartan is a pretty stout lunch box locker. It only costs $260 and for $25 more I got a 3 year “no questions asked” warrantee.

Anyway, I got busy around lunch and left the rear end draining. I’ll tackle it again tomorrow.

you may want to get the side gear thrust washers from the dealer before you remove the spiders, mine were too thick so I had to grind them down a little bit at a time till I had the right clearances. you can do it without having them on hand but better to have them and not need them

Hopefully you have some new cone washers, as you boogered up the ones you have........

Why do you state this?
I've have experiences when installing lockers with aftermarket gears that the cross pin may contact the thicker ring gear. The easist way to install in this situation is to remove the ring gear, install the cross pin, grind the cross pin flush with the carrier, and reinstall the ring.

OK, so you're saying that during installation, it may hit the teeth of the ring gear as you slide it across due to the thickness of the ring gear.

Thanks! That's what I wasn't getting.

I would ASSUME (You know what that gets....) that it should be clear IF you are still running stock gears. However, if you have installed lower gears, it MAY be an issue.

My stock 4.10 ring gear did NOT cause problems installing the pin but the instructions warned that gear sets such as 4.88:1 and 5.13:1 may require removal of the ring gear for installing.
