When installing a factory Toyota CD player in a 62, do I need anything more than the standard wires and antenna hookup? Is there a separate harness that connects (both ends) on the back for the CD to play? I get radio, but no CD. It says a CD is in, but it also show 'LOAD' on the screen (nothing plays). Any help is greatly appreciated. I was under the assumption that this was plug and play. Does the Scion radio require anything more? Thanks.

I've searched all the applicable radio/CD threads I can find here (aftermarket, Scion, Toyota...), but they all seem to be plug and play scenarios. I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't something wrong with the radio I bought.

I had the exact same problem. I assumed it was a bad Scion radio, or at least the CD player was pooched.

So....I tossed it. Maybe too soon.

What have you done since?? Did you get another to work? The seller of the radio has already agreed to refund my money, but I'm still trying to figure out if there's something else I need to do. Anybody? Should the CD work by just hooking up the 62's standard radio harness?

all you need for the cd player to work is power, and you clearly have that. There is no question that the unit you have is bad.
sorry,
j

thanks jan. i will install one more time to verify and then decide what to do.

It be must something with the unit. I installed a scion in my 62 last summer. Plugged in the stock harness to head unit, connect antenna, good to go.

I'm sorry you are having issues..

chip, that is exactly what i was looking to hear - standard connection and working CD. i'm going to hook it back up again tomorrow, just to verify everything, and go from there. thanks!!

I put one from a 2000 Celica AM/FM/Cass./CD in mine..plugged right in to fac. plug

Looked like this

They come in amber or green backlit, did not know when I bought and installed mine, luckily got green and matched everything :D . Just had to slightly trim the top and bottom of the 62 dash bezel.

Looked and worked cool..and looked OEM

Great idea!

You guys have the right idea. I'm looking for a late model 6 disc changer at the junkyard shortly.

OK, one more question on this - I've got the CD player installed again and everything functions properly except for the CD player. The screen reads "CD in" on the corner of the screen, but it also says "LOAD" in the middle of the screen. Nothing I do will get the CD to play. I've looked for Toyota radio/CD troubleshooting sites online, but I can't find a site that has what I'm looking for. Just wanted to see if anyone here knows what to do to play the CD (assuming the CD player actually works). If there's no info here, I'm shipping the damn thing back to the seller. Everything else works great. Any 'trick' to playing a CD?? Thanks.

Incruisers, the one I'm installing is very similar, but is actually a newer model. Have you ever seen this 'LOAD' on your screen when a CD is in?

I installed the 6 disk CD in my 89 with no problems. It came out of a 2000 to 2002 toyota. After 2002 head units changed and have a extra plug for steering wheel controls and most have a different shape on the face so I've stayed away from them. Don't know about the Scions. Some radios require a external and some don't. Mine has the external amp from a Tundra. The external amp from my 2000 LC wouldn't work with the 89s wiring (tundra's will). I trying to upgrade my 2000 LC to the JBL and having problems getting a amp to work even though the wiring plugs in. It's gets confusing. Good luck.

Sounds like the cd player is the problem/dead. On the scion model I have, it says LOAD (blinking) as soon as CD is put in and quits when the CD is seated.

FYI: Got mine after putting a wanted on craigslist, paid $50. Looks new

that is just what i needed to know. thanks chip. my CD goes in and will flash LOAD until the CD ejects itself (sometimes) on it's own. i guess mine is just not seating properly. i actually picked this unit up for $35 + shipping and it's in awesome shape - too bad about the CD player. thanks.

john, this stuff certainly does get confusing when retrofitting a newer unit. i'm not even certain if the '89 FJ62 has an external or internal amp. my FSM isn't here yet and the owner's manual makes no mention of an amp. i hope to make a better purchase the next time around. <g>

Many of those "factory" Toyota radios have an external amp. A good rule of thumb is if the radio has a "heat sink" in the rear of the unit it is an internal amp and could be a plug and play. If it is does not, it will be an external amp. Attached is the front and back of an external amplified radio/6disk/cassette. Dave
