Ok so I'm sure there must have been discussion about this before but I have a 1982 FJ40 with the optional center heater underneath the center console and I'd really like to install a tuffy or similar console while leaving the heater in place. I'd like somewhere to put a radio and my registration that I can lock and know is fairly secure but I also don't want to have to remove the heater. Has anybody made their own adapter/ bracket or tried this? Id appreciate any feedback I can get.

if you left the heater the tuffy would sit too high IMOP. But that said, with enought cutting to the tuffy, I bet it could be done....

I live in WA and took the rear heater out of my 82......I don't miss it at all

my tuffy is mounted right on the floor and it was still too tall, so I took the pad off the top and its just right(wouldn't mind it a bit lower though)

I have a Tuffy console just like LandPimp's. The rear heater lines don't interfere at all with the installation of the Tuffy. I say, "Go for it!" They are really easy to install. You'll need the FJ40 installation part. I bought mine at SOR.

Good luck and best regards,

I too have an 81 with the heater in the center console. would very much like to install a tuffy but don't want to loose the heater.
What did you end up with Charles?
Thanks

this is a link to CCOTS mount bracket--- the hoses run under it.

I looked at mine and thought about running the hoses in a conduit underneath then back up through the floor with a grommet.

might need longer hoses going that route though

I cleaned them up with some expando sleeving and heatshrink but I might still run them underneath cause I'm not keen on them running along the floorboard

So does anyone have a console over the existing OEM heater? i'd like to see which console you use and pictures.!

TY

It won't work without a ton of fab work because the tuffy uses the bolt holes for the heater assembly. You could cut the bottom out of the tuffy and put it on over the heater but then all the heat would be inside the console so whats the point.

Here is my tuffy in my 81. Heater is in the attic where it belongs.

You don't live in Canada.

I understand it won't work with a tuffy, but i'm sure there are other console for the 40?

I had this in my photo collection of modifications not to make. **Also note the missing left pedal.

I don't have a rear heater, 40s in this part of the world didn't come with them. I wanted a center console as well but given where I am and what a pain it is to get stuff shipped here I made one. (see my build thread in sig line) They are simple enough to do and you could probably do it (much better than I did) so the back end had a cut out for the heater with the underside of the box clad in metal so that the part that hung over the heater could reflect some of the heat away from the box's contents. Depending on the material and your skills, I have very few, you might be able to buy one of the boxes linked above and take a sawzall to the back of it. Cut out the same overhang, metal clad the underside, clean it up and make it pretty again. You probably haven't gotten photos of this mod because it isn't one that most folks have done given the presence of commercial solutions, like Tuffy etc, that work. Good luck

hey diesel, thanks for your postup. i been beating my head against the wall looking for a cheap middle counsel (no heater) and i wasn't gonna spend the outrageous price on a tuffy so i bought the vdp original. my seats have had some custom fitting done to them by someone else in the past and i took a tapemeasure and it should line up perfect

I know you hate it it, but I really like it.

Do you know what site you found that? I am not saying I would do it, but it is different.

Lexus? but jeep might be along those lines. ANyone know what it is from?

The tuffy consoles are nice. The CCOT ones are much cheaper but have a cheap locking mechenism. Just wanted to let you know not to waste your time if security is what your looking for.

Weez440- This console has locking mechanisms fo rboth lids and several storage bays, adjustable drink holders, etc. I removed my late model heater console but i believe the heater can be removed from the stock console and fitted in the below section of the console. Just finishing my frameup resto so it will be a project in the future.
